Re: Ignition Timing *again!*
what seems like an eternity ago,I learned to drive in my dad Alvis TA14 ,it had an advance and retard lever on the side of the wheel,Retarted it to start when cold, then put it into the central position when up to temp, including judicious fiddling with the choke. Couldn't hear it when it was ticking...

Re: Ignition Timing *again!*
put the timing light back in the drawer, take car out with pinch bolt just holding dizzy, advance it a bit at a time until the engine starts to pink under acceleration ( slight light rattle) stop and retard slightly test again repeat ,until the noise stops under hard acceleration stop and tighten the...

Re: Preparing a for for spraying
that's it,if you can see a reflection then its near enough, you have a good depth of paint so as you polish (obviously once a week ) it will get better, and better. well done.

Re: Preparing a for for spraying
it's better than two coats, you have plenty of thickness to cut back and polish, fine wet and dry with soapy water to get a dull overall finish ,then polish with t cut.To be honest its what we used to have to do in our family paint shop(In another life ),its always the same problem with celly. 50 year...

Re: Preparing a for for spraying
Difficult to get a finish in celly without orange peel / dull areas, depends on the skill of the painter, and the quality of the gun, best guns are too pricey for one off use, in the early days it was prevented by thinner and thinner coats of top coat until you were just about spraying neat thinners....

Re: Rear suspension knocking
have a look at the rear shackle ,if the springs have sagged the shackle is pushed close to the chassis and then hits it causing a knock if so you will see a mark on the leg, springs have been of dubious temper for a few years, some to stiff some too soft and if the latter two years may be enough to ...

Re: misfire when cold
you don't need the oil just do the test it will be obvious if its head gasket, there will be very low compressions on one or possible two pots ,the oil test is to check for worn cylinders ,rings etc,put the oil in on second test and if pressure rises it indicates wear, since it seals the rings and pis...

Re: Riley front brake springs - fouling hub
they go on the back not only as a return but to hold the shoes up against the back plate,on the front they would tend to pull the shoes away from the back plate onto the rotating drum. The Poster says they are fouling on the rotating hub,may be in wrong locating holes(Easy to mistake ) Can't see how ...

Re: Carb? Stuttering after a while
before doing anything else, take it out on a quiet road and as soon as the stuttering starts ,into neutral and switch off so engine and pump are not doing anything.Coast to a stop and remove the top of the carb so that you can see the fuel level. If low then you have found the cause ,and then you can ...

Re: Knocking sound in 948 Minor
big ends tend to knock on the overrun,as you ease the throttle after acceleration, they will knock under acceleration but need to be well gone by that stage. Mains just rumble all the time .With those oil pressures I would think that its more likely to be the head gasket as suggested. comp. test will...
