Re: electronic ignition kit

I fitted a new Powerspark 45d electronic distributor in February and I haven't had any problems yet. Compared to the old distributor, starting was greatly improved, idle and general running was smoother and there was slightly more power. I suspect that the smoothness and better power were nothing to...

Re: New headlights needed. Halogen?

There's a spring from the outer bowl connecting to a tab on the back of the inner bowl but the halogen unit is wobbling about in the inner bowl where there's no retaining spring.

Re: New headlights needed. Halogen?

I didn't put new light bowls in, I just swapped the sealed beam units for the halogen replacements. Should I have changed the bowls? :-?

Re: New headlights needed. Halogen?

I've just changed both the headlights. It was ridiculously easy to do! Obviously I won't know until tonight how their performance compares but they're working fine. They're slightly loose but I don't know if that matters. The sealed beams were really tight and couldn't be wobbled at all but these ha...

Re: New headlights needed. Halogen?

Right, I've ordered a pair of halogen headlights. I got the ones that Panky recommended but I managed to find them cheaper :) Hopefully they arrive quickly and fitting goes smoothly. Thanks for the help.

Re: New headlights needed. Halogen?

Regardless of the time of year, you do need to fix a faulty headlamp. Without it your car is not roadworthy and legal; which could render you liable for prosecution and invalidate your insurance. OK, that's extremely unlikely, but it is a possibility. Very true, and I will change the bulb ASAP. I o...

New headlights needed. Halogen?

Hi, One of my headlights has blown so needs replacing (luckily not urgently due to the time of year). They're currently sealed beams but it seems to be hard/expensive to get hold of replacements so I'm thinking of changing them to halogen. Can anyone recommend a conversion kit that is as close of po...

Re: nationals nightmare!!

Definitely flush out the cooling system. I did it recently and was surprised at: 1. How much gunk came out of it, and 2. How much of a difference it made to engine temperature. Yeah it will defonitly be done lol and did the proformance change or was it just cooling better There was no noticeable ch...

Re: Heat

I haven't stalled but I drove fifty miles today and then stopped to load the car up for about half an hour. When I switched it on after the break the fuel pump went crazy for a couple of seconds and then stopped. I assumed that was due to vapourisation.

Re: My Engine Rebuild

I've just had a go at it for another hour with no success. The nut hasn't been damaged too much to fit a socket on it, it's only got a couple of chisel marks on it. The lock nut is definitely down on all sides. The adjustable spanner has a pretty good fit on it, it doesn't turn and round the nut off...

Re: My Engine Rebuild

Anti-clockwise when looking at the front of the engine. It doesn't even seem to be about to budge and I've given it as much force as I've got.

I've now broken the chisel by repeatedly hitting the nut :( I don't think it's ever going to come off.

Re: My Engine Rebuild

I've got stuck on removing the nut :-? The starter dog came off fine with the first touch of an adjustable spanner! The nut on the camshaft sprocket seems immovable though. I've doused it in release oil, wrestled with it with an adjustable spanner, hit it with a chisel several times and stood on the...

I've now started on the block. I've removed the backplate, oil pump, oil filter housing, water pump, sump and oil strainer but I can't work out how to remove the timing gears. Any suggestions?

Re: My Engine Rebuild

Don't worry, I wasn't going to wire brush the flat surface! Are there any other bits I should avoid, I assume the valve seats. Would super glue hold the seals on long term? It sounds slightly risky. Is there any disadvantage to using the seals on the exhausts or is it just unnecessary? I'll check th...
