Re: Convertible rear springs - 5-leaf or 7-leaf?

we have been looking into something similar for our 2 door which often carries a fair amount load and some light towing, we have decided on a 6 leaf spring which many others seem to have success with, it's a traveller spring with the bottom leaf removed. Thanks Kevin... that sounds like a very sens...

Re: Convertible rear springs - 5-leaf or 7-leaf?

Before you do push the button try re-filling the damper with SAE40 oil to stiffen them up, makes a big difference but doesn't make the ride harsh. The lever-arm dampers only act as top-mounts for the oil dampers... they've had the valves removed, so I'm not sure that thicker oil will make any diffe...

Re: Convertible rear springs - 5-leaf or 7-leaf?

My 1275 Converted saloon is probably due new rear springs and the poly-bushed ESM kits look comprehensive and well-priced. Wouldn’t it be sensible to determine if it really needs new springs, before jumping the gun? I've been driving it since the mid-80s and it's my feeling that it needs better spr...

Convertible rear springs - 5-leaf or 7-leaf?

My 1275 Converted saloon is probably due new rear springs and the poly-bushed ESM kits look comprehensive and well-priced. Before I press the 'Purchase' button, for 'spirited' road driving, should I be looking at 5-leaf springs or 7-leaf? As the car was originally a 1963 2-dr saloon, I assume it has...

Upper LH Trunnions

Hi everybody, I know I'm not the only person with this problem but my Minor has been off the road for 2 months now, after failing its MOT on upper LH trunnions. I have lower trunnions (LH & RH) and upper RH but apparently no-one has upper LH in stock. Sounds like one small engineering concern su...

Re: Convertible - suspension options - opinions please!

Thanks for the input guys... Using the highly-scientific "squishing them between finger and thumb" scale, my red ones are firmer than the ones in the car. I'm in Leamington Spa, so not too far away from Islip - I'd love to drive your car and see what it feels like... ideally (once it's pas...

Re: Speedo woes

Choose the style of speedo you want (if you still have the original in your car, why not stick with that) then send it to Speedy Cables, along with all the details of the engine, gearbox, diff ratio and wheel sizes. They'll do all the maths and re-calibrate your old speedo to read correctly for your...

Convertible - suspension options - opinions please!

Hi all, I had my Convertible up in the air a couple of days ago to do the rear suspension bushes. A couple of years ago, the car had a new floor, stem to stern, at Charles Ware's, On disassembly, I discovered that they'd refitted my springs with new pins and nuts and brand-new bushes! Bonus... Re: Differential Ratios:

I have a tuned 1275 (around 90hp on Pete Baldwin's rollers, when new [which was quite a while ago]) but I cannot recall what diff ratio was also fitted. Given a standard 1098 gearbox (also soon to be upgraded) can anyone work out what I am running - it indicates around 4200rpm at 70mph... I am runni...

Re: Where have my lights gone?

UPDATE: Looked for Voltage Regulator by fusebox on firewall. I don't have one. Seems to be some sort of big silver box on front inner wing r/h/s... Anyway, lights have miraculously fixed themselves and now all work. All I can think I have done since finding the problem is tighten the battery earth s...

Re: Where have my lights gone?

Thanks chaps... I'll try and find the leak by following your leads...

However, I fully expect to get one hell of a belt at some stage during the process... standard procedure for me!

Where have my lights gone?

This evening I was checking my 1963 1000 (former 2-door saloon) convertible for snags before her MOT (she has discs, a 1275 engine and other mods - plus, you can't be too careful with old cars.) I checked the wipers - OK Indicators - OK Brake lights - OK Sidelights - nope. Main lights - nada. They w...

Re: Mayonnaise

UPDATE: Sent the distributor to Aldon, who stripped and cleaned it, before sending it back. It was partly seized inside, as water had crept in through capillary action, from the water in the sump. Refitted dizzy, gambled on red wire to +ve on coil and black to -ve (as I'd cleverly managed to not ma...

Re: Mayonnaise

Does your Aldon dizzy have a vacuum advance? It all sounds rather like the advance mechanism ,whatever it is has stopped working . Maybe seized up while at rest in your garage. This would at least explain why advancing it up provided a temporary cure. Cheers John G No vacuum advance on this dizzy.

One has 145/70/14 on a 3-inch rim. The other is 175/70/14 on a 5-inch rim. Guess which is which.
That paint finish though... :D :D :D :D :D

Re: Mayonnaise

What is the casting number of the head which can be found on the top of the head? You mention 10 studs. The heads are either 9 stud or 10 stud and 1 bolt. There is not a factory 10 stud head variant. Looking at your photo of the head above the gasket seating areas around cylinders 2 & 3 does no...

Re: Mayonnaise

Today's (limited) progress... Before pulling out the distributor, I thought I'd just loosen the clamp and try altering the timing... I advanced it substantially (around 10-15 degrees around from the mark where it was originally...) Guess what? Fired immediately, ran (pretty) cleanly, revved past 500...

Re starting and running - is the fuel stale?
Thermostat DID work last year.

Fuel very likely stale... but would it cause my non-idling, non-revving symptoms?
