Re: 2 MOT or not 2 MOT
I reckon the buffers were always fitted. I have 2 Minors more than 10years apart and they both have them  How far do the two buffers push the battery forward? Basil, being a SII, has the Big Rubber Bung fitted in the hole behind the battery and that gives ample spacing from the metalwork. How...

Re: Front and Rear Damper Oil Change
What's 10wt oil? Never heard of that grade before! This is a bit of a can of worms... I think it's general confusion amongst people, including some retailers, as to the 'weight' of an oil. The W in a Lubricating oil grade actually stands for 'Winter' : https://www.castrol.com/en_gb/united-kingdom/h...

Re: Electrical issues.
Thanks for the replies! Turns out it was the fuses. Dirty connections & one fuse being very loose in the holder. All working for now but I might invest in a new fuse box & fuses just to be sure. Glad you found it. Back in the day, when most weekends a car owner would be out doing regular ma...

Re: Fitting an aluminium GB plate to car
GB plates date from the original 1909 'International Convention with respect to the Circulation of Motor Vehicles' signed in Paris. The code was only 1 or 2 letters. It of course predates the division of Ireland... and was quite a short list of around 20 countries, I guess the others didn't have mot...

Re: Fuel sender
My initial thought are that you have simply disturbed the circuit somewhere. You clearly didn't have a good earth so you've added a "secondary earth" which isn't required if there is the correct metal to metal contact of Sender casing to Tank to Body Shell. Adding a 'Parallel Earth' isn't ...

Re: New Loom time
You'll get no contrary opinion from me on that... it looks well overdue replacement. The wiring was only ever intended to last the expected/designed life of the car, which would have been around 10-20 years maximum. :o Simple enough job, so long as you get the right standard wiring loom. If you're k...

Re: Electrical issues.
Almost certainly just poor connections, as others have said, check the fuse connections are bright, including the fuse ends, and then examine the condition of other terminations.
It really does depend if the car has ever had a loom change.
I'm lucky, my car's was replace about 23 years ago.

Re: Morris minor ex police car siren
Google say that the sirens and flashing blue light came in in 1963, before that was a bell. If a bell was used, I guess it would have been the same bell used on ambulances and fire engines in the 1950's to 1960's. Yes, the Winkworth Bell, as used on all emergency vehicles until the early 60s. It ca...

Hi all. I need help please, I have asked this question or simular before and did not get a answer, just people saying they did not have sirens or depends on force etc. Please can someone help with my question / want. I'm trying to get a 2 tone siren for my 1968 ex police Morris, I'm not asking if t...

Hi You can't post video to the Forum, what I've done in the past is upload to Youtube and then post the link here. You're right about LEDs, their visible light is not the same as an incandescent lamp, and the Classic Car LED website has a very simple page to explain why. https://www.classiccarleds.c...

Re: It's never the coil
Sometimes some of the wire strands captured in the crimp connection fracture but the actual spade bit still makes a tight connection. That’s even trickier to diagnose. If in doubt and you have the tools anyway, crimping on a new connector is easy to do. Usually affects wires subject to high vibrati...

Re: Won’t start Electronic distributor problem?
And there's still been no explanation for the fault only occurring when cranking the engine over on the battery.... I recommended checking the 12v at the Coil input, but it hasn't been done; I bet that's dropping when the battery is cranking the starter motor, because it's the only logical answer to...

Re: It's never the coil
Thanks berni and oliver. One thing that berni said made me think.... my car died as it was going over a speed bump. It died some weeks ago when I had to drive into a rough layby to allow a lorry to pass....might be significant. Thanks. John. With that snippet, I'd be looking for a loose connection,...

Re: It's never the coil
Thanks, but will a coil with a break in the winding give a different reading than a good coil, if the bad coil when cold sees the break close up and 'mend' again? It will really depend on the severity of the break. Back in 2018, Basil cut out on me on the A1 about 6 miles from home. RAC called, guy...

Re: It's never the coil
It's going to depend on the car and also whether it's a 'Coil' or a Ballast Resistor Coil.
It might be anything from 1 Ohm to 3 or more.

Re: Won’t start Electronic distributor problem?
What is the supply voltage to the Coil when Cranking? I assume your Accuspark is wired as per the instructions, with the Electronics unit being fed from the + connection to the Coil (if it's Neg earth). Is there 12 v on the Coil input, ...what does it drop to when cranking? If you're Pos earth, the ...

Re: Won’t start Electronic distributor problem?
Have a good look at the battery connections too, a high resistance there wouldn't help the matter. The initial breakdown does seem to be a bit of a question mark on the overall scenario, but as John says, if it's not charging correctly, then it will lead to terminal voltage drop. There might be an i...

Re: Won’t start Electronic distributor problem?
I concur fully with John Don't blame the Electronics. Sounds like the 'Mechanic' didn't do a simple battery check, one of the first things they should have done. Was that the RAC before the ride home, or someone else? No doubt too familiar with modern vehicles and not the basics. If it starts...
