Re: Head gasket failure-3rd in 2½ years
I had a flanged nut on a standard A series stud for years, I always did it up to 45 with no worries.

Re: Head gasket failure-3rd in 2½ years
I checked the radiator by pushing a hosepipe into the top pipe & watching water come out of the bottom, then repeating the other way round, also by stopping up the bottom pipe, filling and watching it empty when the bottom pipe was unblocked. It seemed to flow well enough, but that's a blunt, un...

Re: Head gasket failure-3rd in 2½ years
Been a while since I last posted in here. The refaced head is back in, with new gasket. I bought a straight edge, and the block appears, as far as I can tell, to be flat and square in all directions. So far I've done around 350 miles, and there is no sign of the weep of oil from the head next to no....

Re: Leaking thermostat studs
Thanks Phil. I have tightened up the stud nuts a bit more, if it keeps happening, I'll do as you suggest.

Re: Rear hub gasket
In fact, until we cleared out my dad's house, I didn't possess a ball pein hammer, so I had no choice really. Seeing this has reminded me that I now have one, so I might just make a couple of spares.

Re: Leaking thermostat studs
Thanks, good to know it's not uncommon. I may well go down the Hermatite/Hylomar route, though I don't like doing it, as it's a pain next time you remove the thermostat.
What's puzzling is why it's started happening, when all that has changed is the gasket.
Cheers N

Leaking thermostat studs
Hi all, it's been a while.... I've got a problem with leaking thermostat studs. I've done some work on the head, which has entailed removing the studs. On reassembly, I'm finding coolant is leaking up the studs. I thought it was because the threads in the head were full of crud and the studs w...

Re: Rear hub gasket
Make your own gasket with the required thickness of gasket paper. Making a rear hub gasket is an easy task - all you need is a small ball pein hammer and use the ball against the edge of the holes to cut the gasket. Various thickness of oil resistant gasket paper is available on 'e' bay. https://ww...

Re: Ford discs-sticking caliper?
So I *think* I've cracked the problem of the "mystery rhythmic knocking". Having got the engine out, I thought I'd have a look at the gearbox, a quick visual inspection to see of anything obviously won't with the rear bearing. Well, there was no sign of it slipping or turning within the ca...

Re: Rear hub gasket
I thought the thin gaskets were the correct thickness? My hub bearings were loose in the hub, I suspect more because the hubs themselves were worn. The thin gaskets haven't been a problem in terms of oil leakage.

Re: Head gasket failure-3rd in 2½ years
Is this just a plain straight edge, or does it have a laser, It's just a quality straight edge, made by Laser Tools, who supply/manufacture all manner of automotive tooling, multi-use and task specific for particular motors. As above. Best wishes, Mike. Thanks. eBay not playing nicely with me this ...

Re: Head gasket failure-3rd in 2½ years
Hi, Whilst the quality of some head gaskets, copper or otherwise can be questionable I would get hold of an engineers straight edge (if you don't already have one) and check both your head and block, it may be that one or both do need skimming. Also do you have an oil cooler fitted? Best wishes, Mi...

Re: Head gasket failure-3rd in 2½ years
Yes, I meant around the top of the bores, on the block surface, not inside the bores. The inside of the bores looks clean and in good nick-which I'd hope it would be, 2 years & less than 3000 miles since reboring.

Re: Head gasket failure-3rd in 2½ years
If you can feel any lip around the bores, and I reckon you probably can, then the block definitely needs a skim. Fingers crossed all goes back together well, very soon :) I can, but mainly carbon deposits around the top of the bores. If the block is skimmed, is there a problem with the pistons clea...

Re: Head gasket failure-3rd in 2½ years
Hi Phil,
I've got A+ studs & nuts now. I was just speculating whether the lower torque on the big valve head might have caused the head to warp with the higher compression and combustion pressures, from the HC pistons?
Cheers N

Re: Head gasket failure-3rd in 2½ years
Well, I am at the point of getting the engine out to have the block skimmed now. The machine shop have quoted much the same as for the head skim, so cost wise, it's not a big deal, it's just the general pita of getting the engine out and stripping it. I might get away with a head skim, but if I don'...

Re: Head gasket failure-3rd in 2½ years
Torque wrench calibration? John ;-) I can't rule that out. I have two, one is a simple bar and pointer type, that works through the deflection of the bar under load, this is about 7 years old. The other is a click type that is about 30 years old. I've been tending to use the deflection type, as the...
