I would start with checks. Colour of spark at the plugs, fuel delivery by the pump, any loose electrical connections. Number three appears to have a compression problem - but not associated with the present problem. Yes, the mixture appears to be too rich, but unlikely to be the cause of this issue....

I’ve milled down the thicker to the thickness of the thinner. I’ve added extra gasket material under the thinner item. I’ve made stepped washers with the lathe/milling machine. Never relied on glue as a fix, but if it works, why not, I suppose.

First? Check your plugs. That should tell you something. If oil is leaking into the exhaust port(s) like that there is internal trouble. It is either flooding down the exhaust valve guide(s) or passing the piston(s). A compression test might be illuminating. Your pic indicates there is nothing leaki...

Yes, is the obvious reply. Too much current in a conductor will heat it to the point of melting the insulation. Further heating could lead to a fire.

Almost certainly the lighting circuit was shorted to earth - it’s not on a fused supply, until you added one.
