Re: Beehive Springs -again!
Are they really necessary? I've never had them fitted in over 40 years of Minor driving and never had any brake problems other than a master cylinder failing - which, of course, is nothing to do with the beehive springs.

Re: Diff Plug Tool
I found the red ESM tool to be useless as it didn't fit properly and the bend is too far back to get good leverage. I now use a socket wrench without issue.

Re: Electronic ignition
Quite so. And there are previous threads on here by people who decided to 'fix it', even though it was not broken - and were then beset by problems!

Re: Metal trim help
The price of most things seem to have skyrocketed!
One option might be to post in the 'wants' section here - you never know if a good second-hand one is available. I have both bought and sold good quality second-hand chrome stuff on here before....

Re: Electronic ignition
Thanks Stephen for your guidance, it has certainly got me thinking though. The car runs good anyway,I was just considering future proofing it.I am about to give it a full service etc so it should be ok for a while. Thanks again. The car is 56 years old and still 'runs good'. So it was 'future proof...

Maybe its chrome-plated brass and you've got down to the brass?

Re: Clutch cable
But from 'classic car's post it sounds more like the pedal suddenly went to the floor - i.e. something in the linkage broke.

Yes, the trafficators are the same but the brackets are different between the 2-door and 4-door.

Re: Spotlights
A little tongue in cheek, perhaps. Believe me, Bill, I am not advocating such an approach to night driving, of course not. But once was out of necessity as the battery was no longer being charged. And it was in deep rural, no towns, no villages, just the occasional farm house and I knew the lanes li...

Re: Spotlights
I can't see how brighter lights would help with most of those things. I have driven several miles down country lanes at night with no lights at all more than once - the full moon was enough to see by! Eat lots of carrots!

Re: Gearbox Oil Condition & Filling Questions.
Swirls in the oil are common. Metal grains in the drain plug are also common. Just fill the gearbox until it overflows from the filler plug. Let any excess oil drain away and then re-fit the filler/level plug. Or just measure out the correct amount and check that it is up to the level of the filler...

Re: Thermostat housing
I have had a thermostat housing corrode through from the inside - after 65 years. I replaced with like and slathered the studs in copper grease. The cork gasket I used did leak and so I replaced it with one of the upgraded types (for a mini?) Stephen refers to. Sorted.

"At my local MMOC branch meeting this week only 2 out of 20 or so members drove their Minors to the evening meeting. The reason given was that it was too dark on the country roads and the Minor headlights too poor." I don't really understand this. I have been driving bog-standard Minors f...

Yes, clean it all up and give it a few coats of wax. Or I suppose you could try and paint a clear varnish over it.......

Re: Metal trim help
Well, I don't know what kind of finish you are wanting (and how pristine or otherwise the rest of the car is) but what you have polished up so far - it looks like part of the grille surround - looks pretty good from the photo!

Re: Purolator - how tight?
Make sure the canister is not turning with the bolt as you tighten it up and the canister starts connecting with the top sealing ring or the ring can be damaged. Also, the canister should be roughly 3/4 full of oil before fitting, so you will need to keep finger pressure on the bolt head as you offe...

Re: No MOT
Surely if something is found it just needs to be fixed? Can't see why there would be a requirement for an MOT as well. Same as if an owner finds the brakes weren't working - he/she fixes them. No need for an MOT and vehicle is roadworthy again (assuming nothing else needs doing).

Re: No MOT
I would imagine most 'hands-on' owners familiar with Minors would know if the vehicle is roadworthy or not. Even if they put it in for an MOT they would check it over to avoid a fail. Not that I am advocating one way or the other.
