Those numbers relate to the the body production and are NOT the chassis
number. CAM was doing some research into these numbers but it probably got sidetracked.

the general rule is that you need a SOLID oil filler cap if your car has a breather tube which is connected into the AIR FILTER. If your system is the type which feeds directly into the CARB you should have the VENTED
type.

vented
Not conclusive, why didn't they put vented? Both types are listed in the
Minor Developments Ltd catalogue so you could ring 01562 747718 if
you have further trouble locating one. I always understood that the solid ones are hard to locate not the vented.

Sorry, no idea of the meaning of the numbers, you need someone with
a Gold Seal unit who knows for certain when it was supplied so that you can compare those numbers to get nearer the date. You could check the cylinder head casting number which would be 12G202 on a 1098 engine.

The revs per mile for the standard crossply 5.20-14 = 865.
.................................... usual radials 145--14 = 892
I don't know which size of radial you could safely fit to your wheels but
these are the differences.
Revs per mile for 145X13 =934,155X13=913,165X13=892.

BMC you are missing my point. Mugwamps car is fitted with a sealed cap at the moment so removing it WILL have an effect on his mixture, it is when a vented cap is removed that there should be minimal difference
once the Carb has been set up correctly.

Lo Jon, it really depends on wether your car was made before or after 1954 because that is when major updates were made to the Minor. In particular the later type of '3/4 floating' rear axle was fitted which had the diff carrier bolted into the front of the casing. This type will accept all the late...

breather
On the breather systems which should have the VENTED cap the engine revs SHOULD drop if you remove the cap, this proves that the system is working correctly so I suggest that you buy the vented cap pronto. You may then have to reset the mixture but, hopefully you will lessen your oil problems.

MAT is the correct designation for a tourer so why did they think it was not a genuine convertible? With all those mods there are many who would say it was not a Minor any longer but it sounds very appealing to me. As long as it looks like a Minor and you are enjoying it that's fine. A converted sal...

Just make sure that the tank is still earthed to the chassis otherwise your fuel sender will not work! We have had one chap on here who made such a good job of paint and insulation that the tank was isolated.

diff ratios
the standard diff ratio for your car would be 4.555-1 whereas the 1098 ratio is 4.22-1. The correct gearbox for the 1098 has a ribbed outer casing instead of the smooth case of the 948. If you uprated to complete 1098 running gear then you would need the correct speedo which, in order to retain the ...

It is extremely common to have oil leaks from the Minor engines. either from the front or rear crankshaft oil seals or through the drain hole (with a split pin handing down) in the bellhousing. since you have noticed a fresh one and some old ones it would not appear to be a new problem unless the la...

running on
The first thing to do is check the speed of the tickover. If it is too fast,
coupled with possible overheating due to your manouevering you are liable to experience run on. If you have a dynamo then the charging light should be just glimmering at tickover so lower the revs until that
happens.

The front wheel bearings should be manufactured to extremely tight tolerances since there is no adjustment provided for them. The hub nut must be done up to the the 40 ft lbs mark, there should be no 'slacken off the nut if the hubs are tight' malarky. If the problem is too much play with new bearin...
