Re: Brakes
I had brake pedal problems, and found the entire box section about 1-2 mm deep in fluid. The MC was leaking at the plunger end. Note the mess inside the rubber end cap. You can disconnect and remove the plunger while the MC is in place... . 20220126_191644.jpg I did examine the bores carefully and c...

Re: handbrake cables.
Considering that BMC felt the need to reduce the rear wheel cylinder diameter when the eight inch front brakes were introduced. Presumably this reduction was to prevent premature locking of the rear brakes as the resulting weight transfer lightens the load on the rear axle or was it to reduce the e...

They are Wolseley 1500 rear brakes.
They are fitted to give a better braking balance to the Marina disc brakes fitted to the front.

Re: Which speedo
Why would the speedo be different for a Traveller? Saloon and Traveller are identical mechanically aren't they for a given year? The differential is certainly the same ratio on each. I agree it's odd, and looking at the AKD3541, the Potteries branch list may be a bit suspect in that regard. Here's ...

Re: Car will start and occasionally drive a few miles, then splutters and stops!
Generally speaking, if the description of 'Splutters and Stops' is correct, I would be looking at a fuel related matter.
Ignition faults don't splutter.
They can run rough, i.e. if a plug/lead related problem, so perhaps not sparking correctly or just stop stone cold dead if coil related.

Re: handbrake cables.
Well that may be but I have owned my Minor for well over 50 years and it has always had a helper spring helping to pull the handbrake cable to the off position. That spring is not the only odd thing about your photo, I've only just realised, but the lever on the cylinder looks wrong, as though the ...

Re: handbrake cables.
My Minor has always had a coil spring between the wheel cylinder operating lever and the end of the handbrake outer cable to assist in pulling the cable back and off. I note that the ESM handbrake cables do not have the spring. :-? There's nothing like that showing in the AKD 3541, not that I can s...

Re: Which speedo
SN4407/00 was only used on Series 3 Traveller with 4.55 Diff. So probably the wrong one for your Saloon.
See the Potteries branch website: http://potteries.mmoc.org.uk/ID/Speedo.htm
It's not a complete list, but it's very useful nonetheless.

You've not said what engine or gearbox, so I'll ask the question....
Is it the same engine size as came out?
Could be Engine/Mounting Plate/Gearbox combination incompatible?

Re: Identify engine
8G is simply a BMC reconditioned A series engine, so it could be 803, 948, etc, etc As Phil says, 'a photo speaks a 1,000 words, (so long as it's the right photo  )'.... Meanwhile, there's been a few posts about engine ID in recent years, this one for example: https://board.mmoc.org.uk/viewtop...

Re: What is this for...?
Looks very much like a home made 'Anti-Syphon' device to discourage fuel theft; I'm assuming the car hasn't got a Locking Fuel Cap, or perhaps this bendy wire predated a PO buying a locking cap :-? I would say the original intent was that the pump nozzle would fit past the straight bit (on the top) ...

Well those relying on ESSO E5 not having any ethanol had better reacquaint themselves with the ESSO website..... https://www.esso.co.uk/en-gb/fuels We currently supply an ethanol-free Synergy Supreme+ 99 unleaded in some parts of the UK. Re: Yet another indicator problem
Well from the description, the common point of failure is as shown. The Selector Sw (36) is after the Flasher Unit (43). The Flasher Unit requires the system to draw some power before it starts to flash ON & OFF. As both front and rear lamps (37/38) don't work, it logically is the common bit of ...

Well this has lifted the lid off the can of worms.... You've already said: there are a lot of conflicting opinions on this forum. So expect more of the same :D IMHO, the car will run fine, although the mixture setting on the carburettor will likely need a tweak, There will be people here that...

Re: MOT - exhaust
Personally, I avoid the 'big chains' when it comes to any MOT being done on any of our cars. Over the years I've had my fill of BS over things 'failing' at places offering a discounted MOT. I'd rather pay the standard fee at my local independent garage. The issue of the 'Modern MOT' being applied to...

Good Question.... The Exhaust is checked for integrity under section 6.1 Basically, a major leak or is insecure or fumes entering interior/causing a danger to health of persons on board Under section 8, for noise suppression, there is a part that says 'Any part of the noise suppression system: insec...

Re: Who owns Quicksilver (YSY 946)
A slight thread drift - I was talking to a track marshal about our Morris Minors at Goodwood recently, and many years ago he put his spare wheel under the bonnet - he removed the existing bonnet strut and made a new one to hold the wheel. He did this to make room in the boot for his camping gear. I...
