TPM of 1000 is suitable for an 803cc Series II Minor

Re: Bottom trunnion purchase tip.

As to the whether the part numbers are right or wrong in my link above is now academic as I have purchased the three bottom trunnion sets. I am more than happy to trust my judgement in all things Minor and Marina/Ital. Great that you've got the right parts, Phil, and for a good price. The correct p...

As above - places don't seem difficult to find on the internet! I searched now and many results came up, the first of which is:

I'd try https://www.carrestorationpaints.co.uk/

Very good in my experience, and recommended by others who know far more about paint and painting cars than I ever will :D .

Re: Gearbox crunch

You haven't said what year your car is, which makes a difference. the earlier gearboxes, in cars up to the end of 948 production in '62, have weak 'cone' synchromesh, which is really easily beaten. I routinely double declutch my '62 car down into 2nd gear toi avoid crunching it, but all changes need...

Re: 1098cc with smooth gearbox

Thanks for that information. So the standard 803 diff will mean going up through the gears more quickly and a lack of top end speed? So the 1098 in this situation will simply provide better acceleration? Good to know it’s a straightforward job to do. Looks an expensive part to replace though. I wen...

Re: 1098cc with smooth gearbox

I don’t think there is any particular concern - the 803 and 948 boxes are a bit weaker than the 1098 box, but the main issue with the 803 box is the rubbish gear ratios. It is possible to adapt the 1098 box to take the 803 gear lever but it requires some machining - there are write ups of the conver...

Re: Engine not starting from cold

Worth pointing out that no adjustment to the carb should be considered until the air filter has been changed should be considered, if the car is long overdue a service, as a blocked air filter will cause a rich carb mixture :-)

Re: Gearbox

As above really. The Mirabelle Classics write-up (actually from Minor Matters) covers it, but just make sure you do the bit that is mentioned in the paragraph below the main steps as well, regarding changing the reverse selector. You'll curse yourself if you don't do it, as you'll forever be at risk...

Re: Engine not starting from cold

It sounds almost certain that the cause is too much choke causing the plugs to soot up. I doubt it's anything to do with oil - for that to be the case, the engine would have to be pretty knackered. If all is set up well, you should only need full choke starting from totally cold. As soon as the engi...

Re: Engine not starting from cold

Great advice from geoberni - the only thing to add is that pumping the throttle on a Minor (which has an SU carburettor) before starting the engine doesn't actually make any difference, as the SU carburettor has no accelerator pump, unlike a Weber or similar fixed jet carb.

Re: Help for the trafficator switches

The right trafficator switch for a 1957 (October 1956 - October 1957) Minor was steering column mounted and horn push combined, but without a warning light on the assembly. The orange warning light was the top left of the speedometer. . After October 1957 and up to March 1959 the switch had a green...

Re: Should I go Mintex?

I replaced the unbranded shoes on my 948 (7" drums) with Mintex and it made a huge difference - the unbranded ones were rock hard and didn't do a great job of slowing the car down. they did make an amazing squealing noise though... I've since put 8" drums on the car, also with Mintex shoes...

Re: Lumpy running on choke

Without meaning to sound patronising, are you sure you’re using the ‘choke’ correctly before you start stripping things down? All cars are a little different and require a bit of ‘feel’ when it comes to using the choke. If it’s operating correctly, the first bit of movement on the cable should raise...

Re: E10 petrol and valve settings

It’s good that it is indeed possible to remove ethanol from petrol, but given that that will lead to a 10% reduction in volume, and therefore close to a 10% increase in relative cost, I’ll stick to buying super unleaded - it’s also around 10% more expensive but there’s no need to worry about removin...

Re: E10 petrol and valve settings

I thought I'd read that it burns hotter, but could be wrong. In any case, unleaded fuel in general burns a little hotter than leaded, so setting valve clearances to 14 thou in place of the standard 12 thou may be helpful, and won't have any disadvantage. I do that on my lightly modified engine, on t...

Re: Fuel injection kits?

If you're not even planning covering significant miles, I think you'll find it will be a big headache and expense for very little gain, in terms of either performance or economy. SUs are known for offering great economy (better than most other carbs) and a well set-up Minor should easily return 40 m...

Re: Electric Minor and other classic cars.

Targeting the car is all a myth anyhow. Look at how the past 50 years has seen a surge in 'Just in time' supply routes around the globe. Nobody questions how much Fuel Oil is burnt by the cargo ships bringing their Food, Clothing etc from the other side of the planet. Most Cargo Ships burn Bunker O...

Re: carbs and exhaust

On a bored out 948 (now 1030cc) I've found the Maniflow small bore system including LCB far better than the Marina manifold and free flow exhaust I had previously. This is with a mild cam which is actually more increased lift than longer duration. The Difference between the 2 systems was very notice...

Re: Ignition timing using E5 97-98 Super Unleaded fuel - now pinking!

Good to hear that you've potentially resolved your issue - I would be inclined to try another tank of fuel though, as the notion that you've had to retard the timing to cope with higher octane fuel just doesn't make sense - I wonder if it could have been a bad batch of fuel. Additionally, it's worth...
