Re: Engine dies but restarts easily
You don't need to spin engine to test for spark . when it stops, take cap off dizzy, make sure points are closed, push car about in gear to close them.Pull King lead off dizzy and hold close to engine block. With ign switched on. Flick points open with insulated item, screwdriver bit of platic etc and if...

Re: knocking on start up
(we have found cranking it with no choke for a couple of seconds then pulling the choke out stops the noise as well.) exactly like fitting an ignition isolator switch.

Re: knocking on start up
Commonly known as the death rattle..........as you suggest caused mainly by wear in the bearings which lets the oil drain back into the sump when stood for for a long time ,if left it will gradually do the same even after a short lay up,each time it knocks causes a bit more wear etc etc.If you dont ...

Re: Ignition
after re reading your posts you say (Reconnecting the car started first time and then stalled and then nothing) If the car was running as above, there are many things that would cause it to stall,BUT any fault with the solenoid, the wiring or the starter motor would have no effect on the running of th...

Re: Ignition
If the solenoid and starter motor are working as soon as you touch and hold the wire hard onto the terminal(Red and white you have to hold it on not just touch it) you should hear and feel the solenoid clunk as it switches power to the rubber terminal to the starter, the starter should then engage an...

Re: Ignition
just so you are aware of how it works the thick wires with the bare nut are permanently live from positive battery ,the wire under the rubber cover goes down to the starter motor, when you switch ignition from on to the next position ,start, you feed power to the solenoid which is basically another sw...

Re: Voltage regulator/electrical mystery
is this a new fault, as above was it running ok etc. How low is the tick over speed ,when it cuts out is it when you have the clutch down and then put lights on.The hot terminal may be a red herring.Curious fault. Can't think of where there would be a couple of resistors to set up a voltage divider ...

Re: Shine a (dimmed) Light
The main is working because the separate wiring is connected to both sides. and confirms an earth to that side. The dip wiring is separate ,a simple touch with the positive to the dip wire will confirm or not connectivity from that bullet connector to the bulb .Its the simplest and easiest way.It eli...

Re: Shine a (dimmed) Light
you don't need a meter or test lamp, split the bullet connector on the driverside, run a wire from + battery to each of the feed wires(DON'T touch it to the black earth wire)and see if the main beam and dip now work, These connectors are notorious for corroding up,don't think I have ever had a car w...

Re: Stuttering after a few miles then slows down and stalls.
If you now have an us pump then they have a filter which ,if you have enough crud to block the pipe, will catch some of the bits and you should be able to see them ,take the filter out and have a look,It seems strange that the fault clears after being switched off and after a while restarts,if the in...

Re: Cellulose paint
celly thinners contains styrene, thats the nasty bit,but only if breathed in,brush painting will produce very small quantity ,if any ,into the air,so don't worry too much . Spraying produces massive amounts into the air so a mask is essential then. You will find very poor results with brushed celly,e...

Well done:D Thought phill would have spotted it (Probably did but too polite, hes probably correct in his suggestion)was going to also suggest for the fitment of a 2.8 v 6 ford lump, but that would have been a bit to obvious as a wind up.

Re: Stuttering after a few miles then slows down and stalls.
you say that on stopping you have checked the carb bowl and found it half full with petrol (Thats about correct accounting for the displacement of the float)The pump is ticking so thats ok. You have replaced needle valve,so eliminated that. Try getting a known good second hand coil, and doing a swap,...

changing the car size, but similar driver attitude has anyone else noticed how many times you are overtaken,in restricted areas by fiat 500 drivers, they seem to want to prove a point all the time.Worse in 6omph limit areas. They come flying past overtaking three or four cars. then hold the traffic up ...
