Re: 1952 front shock
Try ESM because I think they refurb them. I met a chap outside there one day from South Africa and he had a bag full which he was going to have refurbed. Give them a ring!

Thermostat in MM
I have a USHM3 engine which has even worse performance than normal until it warms up, say two to three miles. I do not have a thermostat installed. Will this engine run OK with a stat?

Re: LED Lamps
I have just fitted LED light boards to my rear MM lights which are L471s. These are a small board with lots of LEDs on them, that fit within the glass lens, flat and not directional. The main reason for doing this is to reduce the load through the brake switch, having had one fail recently, and bein...

The headlights are marked Saturnus or Soturnus, strange lettering and they are UK produced, and they are of course 5.3/4 inch dia.
The centre height is 510mm on mine.

Re: Acid dipping
Really good news about citric acid. There is another acid - phosphoric - which may be used. This is available from farm suppliers, it is used for cleaning cow milking machines and is called Milkstone Remover. The advantage with this acid is that it phosphates the metal after removing the rust. Phosp...

Re: Lowlight conversion for series 2
I recently bought replacement headlights for my MM from a local accessory shop in Headcorn (Kent). They are 4.3/4 inch diameter as also used on Stags, Jags etc, anything with 4 headlights. Also they are made in UK!! Something like £25 quid each, with replaceable halogen bulbs which are more convenie...

Re: Sanding to perfection
For the inward curve you need a round something to wrap the wet'n'dry round, like a loofa, or similar. It should have some spongy property. Don't use it straight up and down, try to use it varying the angle so that you don't "track". Be very careful of the sharp bend at the door bottom, ke...

Re: Hood. Where to nail it
Rob I have the two bolts through the hood on the rearmost frame, as shown previously. It was recommended that an old towel rolled up be inserted into the window fold to stop it creasing, this appears to work well. I now fold the hood to the recommended method in the manual, again this works well and...

Re: Hood. Where to nail it
[img][img][img][img][/img][/img][/img][/img] Rob Further to your latest note, yes I think you are correct, the hood does finish on the front of the wood at the screen end. So the back of the wood does look somewhat tatty. I drilled the old holes into the wood because they had been overused, glued, d...

Re: Hood. Where to nail it
Rob I will take some further photos in the next day or two. In the meantime, yes Jim's schematic is good. The hood wraps around the front wooden rail and in my case was stapled with a pneumatic stapler onto the back of the rail, incredibly fast and efficient. The double strip is then stapled onto th...

Re: I need a new hood - help please!
Buy the hood from Don Hoods in Birmingham and have it fitted locally. Don have the pattern(s) for Moggies. This is the route I took for my MM hood and it worked well, see pictures on the MM section. I also had the rear sidescreens recovered and a new bag.

Re: Roof Rack Chroming
A roof rack is far from ideal for chrome plating, it has an enormous open area and what will happen is lots of metal on the ends of the rack, and probably not much on the inside of curves, if anything. All this assuming he has a plating tank big enough to get your rack in. The plater can make a lot ...

Re: Chassis number stamped position - on bulkhead?
There is a motor club in my village here in Kent. In the '60s the Club was given a 1929 Ford Model AA recovery lorry which we still have and enjoy. Being a recovery lorry it did not have to be registered etc so when it needed a number plate the Man From The Ministry came along and asked for a vehicl...

I changed the rears, from ESM, on a '69 Moggy I had a few years ago. I replaced with rubbers and all was fine, I'm not a fan of plastic!!

Re: MM tourer rear side screens
Rob, I seem to remember Don only supply in Mohair for the MM hood. in tan/fawn which is correct, so maybe your wife didn't have too much in the way of choices. Regarding dirt etc my car is garaged and as yet hasn't shown any dirt. When not up it is bagged. Will be interesting to see what shows over ...

Re: MM tourer rear side screens
The MM was off the road for 20 years between 1990 and 2010 so still left 40 odd years for things to rot out. I have all the MOTs. Maybe the rectangular rear screens are a blessing in disguise, Don recovered without comment so I guess they looked OK when unwrapped. It's good thick steel. Added to tha...
