Re: New member - My first Minor in over 40 years

Welcome and may you enjoy many miles of trouble-free motoring.

If the car has covered only a small annual mileage it is possible some of the wheel cylinders have partly seized. But that is easily put right. Minors even on the smaller size brakes are good stoppers.

Re: Engine & underbody steam clean.

It should be removed from any rubber components it has got to, i.e. rubber mountings for gearbox, exhaust, brake hoses and rubber bushes.

Re: Wider wheels

Wider wheels were available on the van for those carrying the heaviest loads… nothing to do with ride or handling.

Re: 1 out of 4 Spark Plugs Looks Odd. Ideas?

Don't discount wear on the rocker shaft and arms. A little noise from the valvegear is usual but should be imperceptible when driving the car.

Re: Number Plates (size, shape)

The rear wasn't always shaped to fit the aperture, it was whatever got ordered and by whom from the motor factors. I sold a saloon with its original 1956 plates rectangular at the back, and some dolt removed it.

I have had this before but unless the trunnion is worn I would switch to EP 140 oil which will find its way down the threads.

Re: Pull starter

If it still starts when you depress the pin in the engine bay, it must be working correctly and the issue lies with the pull cable, which sounds like it needs adjusting. On these pull start cars it’s not actually a solenoid, just a heavy duty switch, which you have already proved to be working. So a...

Wants the commutator cleaning first and brushes checked before adjusting the reg. And a drop of oil in the end bearing.

Re: SU Carburettor

You need to centre the jet. This is a very delicate and precise process and must be done with the rest of the carburettor fully assembled ie suction chamber tightened fully. But first of all slacken the large jet securing nut.

Re: Won’t rev

If the piston won’t rise through natural induction, it is catching against something. Start by centring the jet. With the engine off, and the carb oil cap removed, the piston should be able to be lifted and then fall down again smartly.

Just have to keep rodding it until water flows… and refill with SOFT or de-mineralised water.
