Re: 1953 (March) Series II Restoration

Little of topic but I am currently having to brake up my early 49 saloon. Are you looking for anything specific?

Early MM parts

Due to a law change regarding rust repaired here in N/Z I'm having to scrap my early MM chassis number 8416. I realise postage will be a killer but I do have some hard to find parts I need to sell so I can recoup some money. I also have the last early screen rubber Frank had left. Feel free to drop ...

Re: Florrie

You need to turn up your wire speed to get some more amps into your weld, currently you are a little lacking in penetration (said the Nun to the Vicar).

Re: Florrie

As Bob said, care and attention. Avoid using abrasive discs to clean the metal for welding, it's going to be thin enough as it is! Look for 3M clean and strip discs, these remove rust without grinding the surface. For MIG welding your butt welds will require a gap of about 1 mm to compensate for the...

Re: Florrie

Lots of posts on here about bracing the shell and taking lots of measurements, it's good advise and will give you some valuable welding practise! However, before bracing the body how do the doors fit in their apertures and what condition are the hinges in? The final fit of the doors will depend on y...

Re: New car coming soon.

I'm good, Mate. Got a little two year old myself. Not yet regretted leaving the wonderful Gospit! Watching that old black Minor get weighed in for scrap was a little heart breaking though!

Whats the plan for the 58? I have a 49 sitting in the shed waiting for me to wield the welding torch at it.

Re: What are the Steps of painting .

As Brian pointed out, painting the whole wing would give a better finish. From where you are now though. You need a long sanding block and some 120 grit sand paper. Use the paper dry on the block to feather the entire area you have sanded with the grinder. You should be able to run the palm of your ...

Re: 'George' 1965 2 Door Restoration Log

If it is currently good and solid your best bet is to leave well alone until you able to have the floor replaced with proper panels. The flat plate that has been used does nothing for the rigidity of the floor.

If what ever medial you are using is the cause of those deep scratches in the steel surface, then stop now.

Re: Split at Rear spring hanger.

That is indeed a rusty spring hanger. However it has taken at least some effort for the second garage to puncture the steel with a sharp steel object, screwdriver, pry bar etc. My recollection of the MOT regs is that the tester can use no more than finger and thumb pressure, or the little toffee ham...

Re: New MOT rules.

As someone mentioned, until the new rules have been in use and better clarified I would suggest the onus be on the owner to research the appropriate rules appertaining to their particular vehicle. Likely as not time constraints will mean that most non specialist MOT testers will be unsure as to the ...

Re: Mysterious rear lights

I've been trying to answer a similar question on my 49 MM. It's an export car (not CKD) and is chassis number eight thousand four hundred and something. It was in the second consignment of cars to arrive in 49 and was sold in November that year. Anyhow, the information I have found and been given wo...

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

Cause and effect, Magic. You will have noticed that it is very difficult to only grind the weld and not the surrounding surface. When the weld penetrates properly it will lay down much flatter because the filler rod is being absorbed into the join. This will then require very little grinding and hav...

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

Try to keep in ming that at some point you and your family and possibly someone else and their family will be relying on your workmanship to keep them safe. The entire floor of a Morris Minor forms the structure that supports the chassis, there is therefore no part of the structure where you can say...

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

A valiant effort especially as a novice butt welding with a MIG. Putting on my constructive hat. The reason you see a crack after you have ground the weld is that your welds are not penetrating, this can not be fixed with JB weld or anything similar it requires welding. Looking at your welds you app...

Re: Painting fibreglass wings

Yes and no. Whilst fibreglass will absorb water if left submerged for some time it is actually sealed by the gel coat, so not really an issue. Whilst primers are porous it has been common practise for many, many years to wet flat the surface and dry with compressed air or simply in the sun on a warm...

Re: Painting fibreglass wings

The problem with fibreglass panels is that they rarely come out of the mould straight enough for a quick flick of primer and some top coat. By this I mean that once top coated you will look down the side of the car and see wobbles in the surface of the panel. To eliminate this you can work the gel c...
