Re: choosing a cam
Albert Thanks for the pointer re pdf. Now able to read the data displayed on page 21 chart. Comparing the MD 266 cam data with the standard Minor 1098cc cam there is a little bit added all round but nothing serious as regards valve lift, valve opening and duration etc. No negatives regarding the MD2...

Re: choosing a cam
Albert Many thanks for the information above. You are right in that we cant have a look as the information displayed on the chart (& even the link) is too small to discern. As regards the spring rate as you have access to a press you can easily determine the rate of the springs supplied b...

Re: What are these
I note that there is a mechanical fuel pump fitted (which I consider to be a very good move) and that rubber suction pipe looks to be very close to the exhaust pipe from where I am looking. The rubber pipe needs to be kept well away from the hot exhaust. The rubber pipe would have been better run fu...

Re: choosing a cam
bmc I totally agree with your statement that you should only use springs of a strength relative to the revs used. I was and still am concerned that Albert would/will ditch the inner spring as recommended and end up with a spring with a rate less than 140lb. Until we know what the spring rate of the ...

Re: choosing a cam
Albert Regarding the valve springs. I personally would fit the double springs as recommended/supplied by Kent Cams. Just because the springs are double does not mean that the double springs are any stronger. You do need to know what the spring loading (for both single and double) is at a specified h...

Re: Axlehousing corrosion, to weld or not ?
Personally I would just look for a good axle. By the time you have spent out on sandblasting (used as a generic term) and welding it will be nearly as cheap if not cheaper to buy a good s/h axle casing. Here is what appears to be a good casing and very cheap at the moment. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/...

Re: Rods
The Mini 1275cc GT had two different crankshaft/rods fitted.
The 12H engine had 1.75" crankpin journals.
The 12G engine had 1.625" crankpin journals.

Les The Marina con rod is Part Number 12G1506. The forging number is 12G1507. The crank pin diameter is 1.7497" - 1.7504". Length between centres 5.548" - 5.7.57". As an aside all the 1275cc rods with 1.75" dia crankpins are interchangeable. The rods in your photo above have...

Re: choosing a cam
Albert Glad to hear about the 940 head. The valve guides are easy to fit especially as you have a press. The valve guides should be pressed in until the top of the guide is 13.72mm above the machined valve spring seat. This is a tool I made up for doing the job. Dimensions for the tool can be found ...

Re: Disc Brakes
I am not aware that there were any mixed Ford/Marina disc brake kits. A photo of the calliper in question would be appreciated. The Marina calliper is fixed to the mounting bracket whereas the Ford callipers in the kits I have seen all float (move sideways) on the locating pins. This is a Marina bra...

Re: Replacing gaskets
In no particular order:- The cam follower cover bolts seals for your engine covers should be 12A1176. You appear to be missing the cup washers, seal (Pt No: 12A1177 (MOSS)) that fit under the head of the bolt and into which the seal 12A1176 fits. There are in total 6 manifold nut but you can use the...

Re: Nuts for damper arm pivot bolt torque
There is something there but it looks more like a shake proof or spring washer.
The locking tab washer must be used or there is a good chance that the nut will come loose.

Re: Replacing gaskets
Give that new inlet/exhaust gasket a smear of grease on both sides. It works wonders and it allows you to re-use the gasket if required. New brass manifold nuts (Pt No: GHF261 (MOSS)) would not go amiss. To make life easier use the double length (Pt No: GHF261A (MOSS)) ones for the four centre studs...

When you are there can you take some photos of the van and get the chassis detail from the plates under the bonnet.
Wishing you both a happy birthday on the 14th March.
It would be nice also to see some photos of both your Minor and you on the special day.

Re: 1275 Midget gearbox quandary
Declan Two small points for clarification:- Your drawing is different to the actual product shown in the photo above in that the arm which carries the connecting link is shorter on the actual product than it is shown in the drawing. Therefore I take it that you have used a standard Minor clutch rele...

Re: Handbrake securing nuts
Nut - Pt No: AJD8104 - available from MOSS @ £0.32 plus the usual.
I have just tried a 7/16" UNF spanner on the nut and can confirm that it is 1/4" UNF.
If the nut was 1/4" BSF the 7/16" UNF spanner would not fit as the 1/4" BSF nut is slightly larger.

Re: bought engine for overhaul need support
When using a lathe to check the ovality of a crankshaft main journal it is better to mount the rear of the crankshaft in a accurate 3 or 4 jaw self centring chuck with the front supported in a live centre. Using the chuck and live centre will also show up any twist or mis-alignment in the crankshaft...
