Differential pinion
When fitting new bearings to the diff pinion whats the concencus of opinion about setting the preload, with or without the seal. The seal is of course going to create a bit more load. The manual says 11 to 13 in/lb as preload. Is it best to set this without the seal, remove the nut, fit the seal and...

Re: Rear hub gasket
Interesting, I do need everything, well the seal as I already have O ring and gasket but thats no issue. The bearings fitted are R&M LJ35s. 6207 is an equivalent, and I can get them from simply bearings from quite a few manufacturers SKF, FAG, NSK, KOYO as either standard or C3. I cant imagine t...

Re: Rear hub gasket
Thanks guys, yes I have read the discussions and there is a split of opinion on the use of C3 bearings. Roy had some strong opinions on the subject. I shall do some searching. The R&Ms fitted have had thier life, really rough and feels like it has some flat spots. Worryingly the hub nut wasn't t...

Re: Rear hub gasket
While on the subject here has anyone fitted the rear wheel bearing as supplied by ESM ?, I can feel a little roughness/clicking in one so the time is coming to replace I think. Curious to make sure the quality is there and the whole lot is not going to disintegrate on me.

Re: Heater Issues
Long shot but it may well be worth pulling the water pump off and seeing if the impeller is still there, I have heard of them corroding away.
I've never had issues with air locks in the minor at all, just leave the rad cap off and burp it.

Re: Steering column felt bushes
I can confirm the nylon bush from a Mini fits the upper of the column, had that mod a few years now and all is good, eliminating the slop. The lower bush is felt still.
The new felts as someone else mentioned just make matters worse, with even more play.

Re: Reconditioned Box - Jumping out of gear
I would certainly agree with what has already been said, that remote housing in no way looks reconditioned, it's part of the box and I would expect to able to eat from inside of it at this stage.
Interested to know how the replacement looks.

Re: Engine beather
Well plan 'a' had mixed success, the top worked an absolute treat, but the breather assembly was off of a mini. It leaves the side cover at quite an angle, on a mini the bottom hose as it leaves the water pump kicks down quickly to meet the rad, on the minor it obviously does not, there was no way i...

Re: Jumping out of gear
Yes its a sign of general wear pretty much all round.
All of these gearboxes are really easy to overhaul, there is nothing wildly complex to them at all, even if you have never done anything like it before.
No special tools required, just a methodical way of working.

Re: Gearbox woes
A stout tie wrap is all you need, and as said do it inside a plastic bag. make sure to line the gear up to the hub in the correct place. Otherwise you won't be able to get 2nd gear and the whole lot has to come apart again.

Yes seen your tip on those, the mesh in my one is no where near that bad yet, but on its way and the clip is well on the way to breaking as well.
Keep you posted how the screw on top works out.

Engine beather
I am playing about with the breathing on the car, and gathering all the parts to make it closed circuit. Part of that is the oil trap that goes on the tappet chest, so I need to make it serviceable, thought it was OK but the wirewool inside is breaking up. So I have worked out the the outer diameter...

Re: rear crankshaft scroll.
As Phil says take it off, I tried and fortunately the engine never made it into the car as the seal just did not fit properly. Reinstate the original scroll with all of the parts, getting the cap within .002 - .003 all round is crucial, if the bearings are in good order, there is no excessive blow b...

Re: Best type of garage door
I have a sectional door that rolls up into the roof space, electrically operated and have had no problems with it. There are various options with these such as an external handle and release, which I opted not to have for security, and having it insulated, its quite thick and is not just bits of pre...

I would be the same as Les, it would have to come out and then I would get someone to TIG weld it up. Thats certainly not been done in an engineering manner, whatever it was trying to do.

Re: Moss Viton sender unit gaskets - a warning!
Cork gasket with a wipe of Hylomar worked for me, the screw threads need to be sealed with a fuel resistant sealer - I used Bondloc B577. I was getting the smell of petrol with it creeping up the screws which I get no more, the Bondloc has been there for 18 months now. Has a multitude of other uses ...
