Re: Dash Controls

"Dash controls" fall into different categories and depend on the year of manufacture. Always disconnect the battery. You will need to remove gloveboxes and/or speedo to gain good access. "Toggle" light switches have a securing ring on the front of the dash. Put the switch lever i...

Re: No more REDEX???

Castrol valvemaster is one of the better products, and works out very reasonably when you see much petrol a bottle will treat.

Re: Windscreen Washers

From what you say, I deduce that you have replaced the standard manual pump with an electric one. Are the jets blocked or the hose kinked behind the dashboard? It's not unknown for the small plastic T-piece behind the dash to break after 45 years meaning that the pump does pump, but the water goes b...

Re: Idiot's guide to an Oil Change

Procedure: Run the engine until warm, switch off Place a suitable receptacle under the engine near the back. Undo the sump drain plug - wearing a rubber glove of some sort can be a good idea as you will almost certainly get oil on your hand. Don't lose the plug! Oil will flow out. When it stops, pou...

Re: To err is human.

Thanks for the comments. Indeed, as I wrote originally At least oil floats on water. so yes, I had already extracted at least most of the mess by filling and mopping, sorry I didn't make that clear - I was just confessing that, despite what some people think, I am human! Hopefully it's a timely warn...

To err is human.

Two months ago I changed the oil in one of the engines. A convenient container was to hand for transporting the waste oil to the recycling centre. A month ago I had three days hectic activity polishing three cars and servicing one. I then had a day tidying the garage before going on holiday. This mo...

Re: 5 Speed box on a 1098cc?

I've used Ford 5 speed with Minor 1098 for years. Works fine, but you will need to change down from 5th to 4th on long motorway hills. Overall a great improvement.

Damn users. If it wasn't for them, the systems would work perfectly.

I presume that we are talking about standard Minor hubs and bearings, not modified disks or something similar?

Re: Swivel Pins

You were VERY lucky with the steering arm removal, it's often a thankless task, even with heat.

If fitting new swivels, then invest in the trunnions from Morris Minor Centre Birmingham. They have extra grease nipples to ensure a good distribution of grease around all the threads.

And they call it "Progress"

Those old enough to remember valve radios or analogue tuning dials will recall that one switched on a radio, waited for it to warm up, and then had to twiddle to tune in. Than came transistors, chips, VHF, phase locked loops, and preset buttons. Excellent. Switch on radio, instant reception. Instant...

Re: Gearbox Tension Cable !

Definitely should be one there. When at rest there should be a small amount of slack in the cable. It is not designed to be tight and pull the box backwards, but (as above) to stop the assembly moving forwards under heavy deceleration.

Re: Brake fluid leak

Whip the drums off and have a quick look at all the cylinders. Does the system hold pressure when you press and hold the pedal? You really do need to sort this out before it leads to a serious accident.

Re: rear brake drum screws

Do not omit the screw on the flange into the hub, it is essential to maintain the oil seal. If the holes in the new drum do not line up then the drums are faulty - the hub hasn't changed!. Contact the supplier and ask for some that fit.

That sounds right. The large O-ring was added later on, prior to that it was the gasket only. There is also an oil seal inside the hub.

Re: Ooops... i've blown a fuse

The pad on the switch should indeed be in contact with the brass collar around the column, that's what allows the horn to work. The problem is likely as above.
