Followed your advice and greased the letters before spraying. They are riveted to the back-plate, hence why I've left them on.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Reg Plate Restoration
Chris, the plates are like the ones in the first photo - the letters stand proud of the plate by about 10mm.
How do the letters come off the back-plate?
Thank you.

Reg Plate Restoration
I would like to repaint the reg plates on my car - the front one looks especially tired from years of having grit and other debris being thrown up off the road at it. There are lots of dots/bare patches in the black paint which reveal the metal below (presumably aluminium). The plates are the raised...

Re: BATTERY GOING FLAT
My gut feeling is that there's nothing wrong with the car; it's the way it's being driven. I'll check the fan belt etc tomorrow, but I'm pretty confident that all's well dynamo/voltage regulator-wise. I would add however that this has all happened in the space of a couple of weeks - would such a sho...

BATTERY GOING FLAT
Evening. I'm looking at a friend's Minor for her (1956); the car is cutting out and not starting again, but I'll give a bit of background info first. Before Christmas, my friend returned to Germany for about 6 weeks when the car was left standing without being started. Not surprisingly, on her retur...

Re: Dynamo Bearing Replacement
Thanks... yeah I've just been looking elsewhere and saw the idea of using an old fan belt. I have been recommended that if I do buy a new dynamo, the voltage regulator should be replaced as well - as there can sometimes be problems. Providing it's been polarised correctly, should there be any troubl...

Dynamo Bearing Replacement
Not sure whether this should go under 'electrical' or here, but I decided that strictly it is a mechanical problem... My dynamo bearing needs replacing. I had a go at it today, but could not for the life of me undo the nut which attaches the pulley wheel to the armature shaft. Has anyone got any sug...

Dynamo Bearing Replacement
Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong forum on the messageboard - being a mechanical question about an electrical part, I couldn't decide - so have plonked it here. I am pretty sure that the ball bearing in the drive end of the dynamo is shot; there is a noticeable 'grating' noise which changes...

Re: Worst Accessory Ever ????????
Hmm... I used to have a door mirror which I had fixed to the quarterlight glass. Last year I replaced my quarterlight, and never got round to refitting the bolt-on one. It did take me a while to get used to looking at the wing mirror - but, I've now decided I much prefer using that and will not be r...

Re: Beam Deflectors
OK - thanks - I'll probably do that then and get the stickers. Yes, we are getting the overnight crossing on Friday (arriving in St. Malo on Saturday morning).
Out of interest - did it used to be mandatory to have yellow headlights in France for foreign cars then?

Beam Deflectors
I am heading off to France for Minors on Tour on Friday ( :D ), however I need to get hold of some beam deflectors. I have seen other Minors with amber coloured clip-on ones; which I believe were (are?) made by Lucas. I've done a bit of internet searching and it would appear that they are not made a...

Thank you, I think it probably is just a bad connection. I shall remove the wires and give a cleanup.

Intermittent starting problem
For the first time ever yesterday, having driven the car for a few miles, I went to start the engine using the key and when I turned it got nothing - absolutely nothing - apart the ignition light and oil light illuminating (these were much more dim than usual). So, I popped the bonnet, had a quick l...

Re: Indicator stem light permanently on??
Honestly, I would send back the new ones yo'uve bought and ask for a refund - this is what I did with mine - perhaps it's just coincidence, but, as I said, the two new flasher units I bought were most certainly naff seing as the old rusty one works fine. As for getting your car through its MOT, yes ...

Re: Indicator stem light permanently on??
I had a similar problem last year when the light on the indicator stalk suddenly stopped working. I bought two new flasher units and both of them caused the indicator stalk light to be permanently on. After seeking the help of a friend who had a rummage in his garage and found a rusty old flasher un...

Re: Growing Convoy for National
I'm coming from BN14 0EB, West Sussex It sounds like a great idea - last time I went to the National I didn't see a single Morris for the entire journey! As for avoiding motorways - it looks from the map as though there's an expanse of countryside road between St Albans and Knebworth... it would cer...

Re: Brakes (again)
I took off all of the drums yesterday; cleaned them and readjusted the shoes. The noise has since disappeared! (perhaps brake dust was causing it...?)
Thanks for your help.

Re: Brakes (again)
Thanks all. I will try and find time to adjust up this weekend and, if no luck, see if swapping over makes any difference. My suspicion however is that the drums are misshapen.

Re: Car security/locking bar from steering wheel to pedal
I might try the last suggestion - my crook lock (which is supposed to hook around steering wheel and clutch pedal) doesn't work because the pedal comes out of the floor. Hooking it around the seat sounds like a good idea.
