Technical Tips in Minor Matters 44/4

So, browsing the latest Minor Matters, I was reading the Technical Tips... I wonder if the author 'retired auto-electrician' Geoff Marshall is on this Forum?? There's a segment about repairing the Self Cancelling mechanism of the Indicators, a nice little luxury for those with later cars, but I was ...

Re: Early heater tap

I’ve repaired antique house taps. I thought they used “greasy hemp” as the gland packing? Gas tape which is thicker and stronger than ordinary PTFE tape works quite well. This is the plate I was referring to that is used with my later tap. I do not know if it was used with the earlier taps. The ord...

Re: Early heater tap

They have sealing rubbers? It normally a fibre/graphite packing as used on valves/water stopcocks etc Picking it out will wreck it ......as Geoberni found out  Taupe Actually it was already completely shot; if you look closely at my #1 of the installed valve, you can see a bit of it coming ou...

Early heater tap

Hi All So, taking Basil's engine out for the clutch, amongst other things, I've removed and serviced the Heater Tap. With reference to the composite image below.... Ever since I brought him, there's been a bit of damp seepage around the join to the head, and around the top of the tap, as illustrated...

Re: Cheap Insurance !

I was just, out of general interest, illustrating how so many different comparisons can be made, that's it's hard to get a real impression of the cost. Take the original cost of the cars for example, in the 1950s the extra taxes were a huge percentage of the final cost. When I left school, I went to...

Re: Cheap Insurance !

Interesting.... According to the Bank of England, £6 back then is £119:46 now. £1 in 1951 would be £19:91 now. But that is all rather 'academically' calculated using just annual monthly/inflation data, so not real world value in terms of the family budget. What's really relevant is how much of your ...

Re: Rear Plate Gasket

Absolutely no need for a propriety sealant. Just lightly smear the gasket on both sides with general purpose grease. The grease keeps the gasket supple, helps it bed in and helps with sealing. I use nothing else and my engines are oil tight. :tu1: Thanks Phil, I had a feeling that would be the answ...

Rear Plate Gasket

Hi All So I've finally got the engine out of Basil. The clutch needed investigating (turns out I've caught it just in time :o ) so now's a good time to replace the 1098 rear plate with the correct Smooth case one. The person who put it all together some 20 odd years ago must've had shares in Red Hyl...

Re: Starter motor problem

I cleaned the terminals and was just starting to take the starter motor out when I read the post about the battery, while it might be reading 12+ volts on the voltmeter it was possibly not producing sufficient current to spin the stater motor fast enough to operate the bendix. ( the battery is old ...

I agree with Bill, you've previously posted that list with all the "Can be easily changed back' caveats, well guess what, changing back to Pos Earth is equally as easy.... That is except for the fact that you've potentially already paid more than other people just to get Pos Earth versions of :...

Re: Contacts at the DVLA

I wouldn't bother. They've sent you a reminder twice for the same vehicle, ...well that's their problem. Just use the DVLA site to check each of your vehicle's expiry dates by their reg number. You can do it in a minute or so for each vehicle. Then you'll have the peace of mind you are seeking, with...

Re: Starter motor problem

Without actually hearing it, it's hard to say for certain, but assuming you have got good clean connections, it's likely that the Starter Bendix isn't flying out enough to connect to the flywheel. There's no need to touch the Distributor (assuming that you have a standard engine & gearbox, and h...

Re: Very dim rear indicators and brake lights

Just been checking again ,the brake lights work fine ,the indicators all flash weakly indicating left or right ,front is stronger than rear but indicator arm down or up all 4 flash weakly . Put on the four way flasher the front is normal but nothing at the rear . Right.... :tu1: In which case, that...

Re: Very dim rear indicators and brake lights

Is it only the rear lighting? What about rear/tail lights? They have the same supply as front marker lights so are the rear dimmer than the front? If so, it can only be the earth path. It's the only common part of the circuitry. rear indicators very weak and both flash weakly What? Are you saying th...

Re: Daily ... well summer.... use

Taupe I understand your concerns, but it really is the first use of the vehicle after 1986, so if it had halogen lights fitted in 1990 and then the halogens are replaced with LED in 2015, that's all legal. Basically, The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989, do not mention LED or HID lighting, b...

"LED headlamp bulbs (these are the type that are a direct swap for a halogen bulb with no additional wiring)" And illegal in a reflector light unit. Perhaps you'd care to double check that statement..... From the latest MOT manual linked to above... Existing halogen headlamp units on vehi...

Re: Daily ... well summer.... use

OK, that's cleared that up. The speedo should be a percentage rise, due to the way the drag cup speedo works. For anyone who doesn't know, the movement of the Needle on the Speedo is caused by a spinning magnetic field. Basically, the cable from the gearbox spins a magnet, the magnetic field rotatin...

Re: Daily ... well summer.... use

Replaced the cable so no longer got that bouncing all over the place but the satnav says it’s about 10pm low…. Is that 10% low, ie reading 54/55 when you're doing 60mph? How are you checking this, on your phone map/GPS? Well assuming you're meaning in top gear when the gearbox ratio is 1:1, the fir...
