Re: Importing my Morris Minor to the UK
Hi Daniel, Good luck with it - I'm sure you'll figure it out? Where abouts are you? I used to love in Ra'anana and also Rishon le Zion years ago. I was tempted to import my mum's car over to the UK from Israel a few years ago, but what stopped me in the end was the bureaucracy at the Israeli end. CA...

Re: Ignition Timing - Thoughts?
Surely the numbers are degrees of advance at a given rpm (mechanical advance) and load (vacuum advance)?! RPM on the x axis, load on the y axis. There is essentially a max of 32 degrees of MECHANICAL advance at full revs and full load (with no vacuum advance of course), but under lighter load condit...

Re: Fitting Oil Gauge
Some engines have virtually no oil pressure at idle and run for thousands of miles like it Rover V8's are a classic example , my Range rover barely moves the needle when hot, even the re-built lump in my TR7V8 doesen't make much over 10 psi. Modern cars have electronically controlled variable displ...

Re: Fitting Oil Gauge
There is no need to over egg the oil pressure. 50psi when hot and 25psi at idle is all you need. Having high oil pressure creates heat and saps engine power. The oil temperature when hot should be around 100 - 107 degrees C and no lower than 80 degrees C. To get the correct oil pressure and so cont...

Re: Fitting Oil Gauge
Can we have a consensus of oil pressure? What does your moggie run at Cold/hot ? John ;-) 60 psi cold, 45-50 psi hot, but how accurate the gauge is is anyone's guess. Also it depends on the revs at the time of course. My slightly modified 948, rebuilt 10 years ago, maintains 40 psi at idle when pro...

Re: Non-Minor but Morris - E-Series
I can't answer the question you're asking, I'm afraid, but I would LOVE to know how you get on. I've got a Wolseley Six (2200) and have put a Princess engine and diff in it with a slightly higher final drive, but have often wondered if the 5 speed from the 1500/1750 4 cylinder engines could somehow ...

Re: Series MM axle removal
I need to swap one out later this year and do not plan to remove springs. Anybody know if you can float the backing plates, so there is no need to bleed the brakes. Can't see why you can't do that. I did it the other week when I took the half shafts out to replace the wheel bearings. Only caveat is...

Re: The price of tyres
I'm surprised that £36 seems expensive - I know it's all relative, but that seems like very little for a new tyre to me. I've just had to pay over £240 for ONE new tyre (granted a decent brand one as I don't like to skimp too much on tyres) for a 13 year old Jaguar. You could nearly get two complete...

I'm sorry - I can't help with the question around the routing on a LHD car, but I can confirm that it is absolutely a standard fitment on an early Series II

Series MM axle removal
Hi All, I need to replace the entire axle in my '52 Series MM. I gather that on the late SII and 1000 cars it's possible to remove the axle from the car with the springs in situ, but for some reason the workshop manual for the MM with Nuffield axle claims that the springs should be removed from the ...

Re: Diff
If the diff in your car is the original ratio, it will be 5.375:1 which is horribly undergeared for a 1098. The standard ratio for a 1098-engined car was 4.22:1 and it's pretty well suited and will be a huge improvement on the original Series II ratio if that's what you have currently. I fitted a 3....

Re: Speedo reads high
I'm sorry to spoil the fun, but I don't think you'll be able to replace the drive for another one and see any difference. The reason is that it meshes with a drive gear on the 3rd motion shaft in the 'box, so short of stripping the 'box and replacing that too, you won't be able to alter the output o...

Re: Rain Issue
I'd say that it's too warm at the moment for carb icing - in my experience, that occurs in the colder, damp weather (though I haven't experienced it for years and years). HT leads would have been my first port of call - I suspect that if you change them, you will solve the problem. Electronic igniti...

Re: Synthetic engine oils
I have in the past been involved with cars fitted with petrol engines using detergent diesel engine oil in the sump. No problems with using diesel engine oil but it does require the oil filter to be changed at the correct service intervals. The detergent keeps the inside of the engine nice and clea...

Re: Recon 1098 rumble.
Are you certain that the timing is where it should be? On a 1098 I had a few years ago, I got bearing rumble when I'd changed something and inadvertently retarded the timing way too much. It's worth a check as the hot oil pressure figure looks very good.

Re: 948cc cruising speeds
Cruising at 60 mph should be no problem in a 948 with a standard (4.55:1) diff. Very roughly, the gearing should give around 15 mph per 1000 rpm, so at 50 you’d be around the 3500 rpm mark. It’s possible you’ve got a diff from an 803cc car fitted I suppose (5.375:1) , if the revs are higher than tha...

Re: Reg Question
Someone else will be able to shed more light on this than I can, but my understanding is that, for a period, DVLA (or DVLC then) issued 'A' suffix plates when the original, pre-suffix plate was removed from a pre-1963 car and allocated to a different car. Nowadays they issue an 'age-related' plate, ...

I wonder if changing a crankshaft or big end bearings was feasible with the engine running?!
