Re: Breather set up for a late 1098 engine

Hi Phil, I thought I did, but looking at these photos, it looks like it's connected to the vacuum advance for the distributor! I'll have to go and have a proper look in minute. There's a home-made manifold between the carb and the intake manifold which the brake servo and breather pipe attach to. Se...

Re: Fast idle due to overheating (possibly)

Hi again, Thanks for the suggestions. Sadly these things are now getting beyond my skill at fixing so I have booked her in to be looked at. If anyone's interested, I'll report back with what the problem was. Good luck, I hope it's an easy fix. I'd be really interested to hear what they find as I ha...

Breather set up for a late 1098 engine

Hi all, As I've probably mentioned before, when I got my car it had been fitted with a bit of a Heath Robinson breather arrangement, intended to stop oil leaking out the rear scroll 'seal', but I've never managed to get it working properly. Instead of oil leaks from the back, I'm getting leaks into ...

Re: Starter solenoid on the way out

While test lamps have their place in a testing regime, you have selected the wrong test procedure. Ah! Apologies, I had misread the last line of your previous post. You're right that the test lamp is only a few watts - it's just a spare indicator lamp with a couple of lengths of lead and crocodile ...

Re: Starter solenoid on the way out?

After behaving perfectly for almost a week (with a lot of driving), this evening she refused to start again, so I was able to get the test light out. Connected to the wire from the ignition and earthed on the chassis, turned the key and I got a light first time, so I think the wiring is OK. I'll che...

Re: Squeaky brakes and handbrakes

Well, I took the car in to the local MOT station, the good news is that the brakes passed with flying colours! No squeaks on the way there either. It's a good feeling knowing that all the jobs I've done on the car pass muster. The bad news is that there is a small patch of rust and a little hole on ...

Re: Starter solenoid on the way out?

I think the redundant solenoid is the one on the bulkhead, I.e. it has been disabled and the one on the starter motor is the one being used. Yep, the solenoid on the bulkhead is basically just being used as a terminal block, the working solenoid is the one piggybacked on the starter (or slung under...

Re: Squeaky brakes and handbrakes

Suppliers sell brake shoes and also Mintex brake shoes, I don't know what you got but I found an improvement with Mintex shoes, also, if your drums have been skimmed it may take longer for your shoes to bed in .. I cant quite make out a wear pattern in your picture but if your shoes are more likely...

Re: Squeaky brakes and handbrakes

Thank you Phil, that reassured me! It doesn’t feel like it’s rubbing when I turn the drum by hand but it must be if it’s getting hot. I’ll do that now.

Best wishes,
Seb

Re: Squeaky brakes and handbrakes

I adjusted the handbrake as per the manual a while ago, and all has been well since. I noticed that the locking nuts on the handbrake lever tend to gradually undo themselves, so I’ve nipped them up and put a drop of loctite on the threads. What hasn’t improved is the squeaking from the rear o/s brak...

Re: Starter solenoid on the way out?

You could use the starting handle for its designed use? Additionally you could wave it at the other plot holder (while explaining that you do, at least, have an alternative starting aid available if the starter fails to operate or if the battery state of charge is just insufficient to turn over the...

Re: Starter solenoid on the way out?

I'm waiting for a new starter solenoid to be delivered, and not before time as last night at the allotment the car wouldn't start at all - not so much as a clunk. The pre-engaged starter is mounted very low at the back of the engine bay and I couldn't really see the terminals I'd need to bridge to h...

Re: Back door seal problems on 1968 traveller

Hi Time Traveller, I can't see your original thread, so don't know if there are photos there, but I have the quadrant seal fitted around the door aperture, and the only seal on the doors themselves is a flat strip going vertically down the left hand door. It does make a tight fit, and I have to be c...

Re: Indicator/hazard light wiring

Just a final post to say that I fitted the diode harness from Classic Car LEDs this afternoon, it was a piece of cake and everything is now working perfectly. My new, old stop light lens arrived today as well, so now all my rear lights are bright and visible. Here's a snap of the the original Lucas ...

Re: Indicator/hazard light wiring

That is what you would call a "Timeless" Photograph. Unless I have missed something it all looks period, even down to the tax disc ?. Phil It's an original 1971 tax disc, but if you look very closely, it has the wrong reg number and it's not for a Morris unfortunately! It was a present fr...

Re: Indicator/hazard light wiring

Well, I disconnected the dashboard tell tale lamp and the wires I'd added to it, and everything is working as it should. Once the diode and harness from Classic Car LEDs arrives, I'll see how they recommend fitting it. I went for a quick test drive after doing a few other little jobs, and took this ...

Re: Traveller rear door seals

Thanks both, that's brilliant, and will hopefully help others in future as I've searched high and low for good pictures of the door interface and drawn a blank! It looks like my doors have dropped about half an inch, as the top of the doors is about level with the bottom of the rubber quadrant. They...

Re: Indicator/hazard light wiring

I brought a magnetic base LED Beacon to to use if I actually break down, having done so twice on the A1 shortly after getting the car.... :o That would have been my preference - much easier than wiring a switch in - except the roof and rear panels of the Traveller are aluminium so it wouldn't stick...

Re: Indicator/hazard light wiring

Hi I retained my standard bulbs for the indicators so as not worry about the problems you have had, I reasoned that the amount of current they will be using is going to minimal when the are not lit for more than a few seconds so LED seemed a bit OTT. I have found some excellent side lamp bulbs that...
