I don't think ALL ''sealed for life batteries' are actually sealed. true - Even brand new cars (I was just looking under the bonnet of one) have 'sealed for life batteries' but press when I pressed down on the thin 'sealed for life' label and you can tell that there are 6 plastic screw caps under i...

Willie , Thanks - that explains the ones I've seen with tappet chest breathers. Some were later cars but others were early cars with 1098 engines added so I was never really sure if that was a proper moggy thing or just came with the donor engine. I'd presumed that the early 1098 rocker-cover breat...

I assumed the worm and wheel in the wiper motor was being referred to. The wheelboxes are rack and pinnion. well said! ;-) Yes - I was reffering to the worm and wheel 'gearbox' at the motor end. This will turn the opposite way, however it can only pull/push the cable whichever way it goes round. Th...

I wonder if elongated flat washers, similar to those used on the sump flange, would work on the timing chain cover
I think it is meant to have those (certainly does on on the small screws)

I think the wiper motor turns the opposite way when polarity is changed but it doesn't seem to matter
that will probably make it last longer as it will use the other side of the teeth on the worm and wheel :-D

As we agree it a air temperature problem caused around the pipe feeding the pump it's a combination of air temperature and pressure (vaccum) so yes, if you want to keep the suction pump then the temperature is the bit that needs sorting. Would it be possibe to run the pipe up the inside of the bulk...

And the main problem is not the pump but the pipework feeding it I think you're missing something there Kevin? The problem is fuel vapouristation, which occurs because of the mild vaccum and raised temperature. What the diagram shows is a way to keep the fuel under raised pressure instead of a mild...

If the previous owner had the head converted, then I would expect they should have kept the receipt, or failing that at least told you it was done and when.
If they give the "I'm not sure but I think so" answer then I tend to be a bit untrusting of that.

Kevin - form your comments I expect that his diagram has 'word wrapped' on your screen. The 'CARB' should be on the far right! I've wondered about that configuration also, and the // valve you mention is called a non return valve. The problem with NRV's is that they are either unreliable at low flow...

the original Minor engine (1098) vented from an oil separator on the tappet cover into the air filter Was that fitted on the moggies? I've seen them but never really knew if they were original fit or an Austin version of the engine, as most of the 1098's I've had had an inlet/vent on the tappet che...

and DO NOT overtighten the small screws! The little 7/16" (11mm ;-) ) ones are tapped into just the end plate and will strip sooo easily  Avoid the risk to use a socket wrench as it is easy to forget which size you are doing up (There are 1/2" and 7/16" and the 1/2" should b...

I had that once with a faulty rotor arm - I very much doubt that is likely to be your probolem but it goes to show how hard it can be to figure out missfires! the rocker cover vent is an outlet, and needs an inlet - this is done via a tube off the front tappet chest cover. For the midget, there are no tappet chest covers so that is not a good option as you're missing an inlet - therefore the usual way is to slim down the timing chain cover breather so it ...

the damper only limits the 'bounce' behaviour of the car and as Cam says - if the car is pitching down on cornering you need to look at the suspension! Is there any EASY way of adjusting the arm so that there is a bigger gap between the front left wheel & the bodywork The ride height is set by a...

OK Colin if I have understood correctly (probably not) that when the external pressure rises to match the fuel pressure this is where vaporisation begins to start not really! The pressures quoted are in absolute, whereas most peple think of pressure in 'guage' (ie relative to atmospheric pressure o...

laying under a car and welding to the rusted underneath is bad enough with the gas turned up high, let a lone a gasless mig. You are brave! If you do high miles and have never oiled the rear bush on the dynamo I suspect it has run dry and may now be may be badly worn. This can cause a nasty screeching and also the brushes will spark more as the shaft is rattling around..... It may be the roller bearing at the pulley end (as already sugg...
