Re: 1958 2 door, rolling resto

Thabks palacebear, i assumed that was the case, but not looked into it properly yet. The plate did confuse me when i bought it as it has later (uglier) front and rear lights, no semaphores and no wipers. So nothing to tell me straight away that it was an early car. Started piecing it together when i...

Re: 1958 2 door, rolling resto

Hey, yes i masked it off. It has quite prominent pressings on the digits, so quite easy to mask and then used a stanlet blade to trim the excess. It's not perfect, clearly, but it one that fits the boot recess properly, so worth it. I will at some point hopefully look at getting an age related plate...

1958 2 door, rolling resto

Hello folks, I have been posting stuff on the facebook page, but i find it pretty poor for starting a thread about my project, so easier to do it here. That and i keep coming back here from google searches when i need info, so may as well add my own! The picture below is the car after i collected it...

Re: engine sizes

As ever you have blown me out of the water with hard facts 😂

As an aside, i had a Herald estate too, wonderful thing. I'd have another in a heartbeat, but rare and expensive now. I'm saying that as if i had it years and years ago, it was only 7 years ago!

Re: engine sizes

Having had a Triumph 1300,1500 (both in Heralds) and a 1275 Minor, i would say the 1300 Triumph was the better engine. If i had the inclination i would be tempted to do the conversion, but i kind of prefer messing about with small bore engines these days, and my budgets are much reduced!! If on a bu...

Re: Wing Mirror Position

I do gree about the holes Brian. My new car has 3 additional holes cut in the dash for switches. A horn one, reversing light and washer jets. With a bit of effort, these could have been alleviated, but i am going to either have to fill and paint the holes or use them for something else, probably the...

Hello Rod!
How's life treating you these days? I could do with another car in Gosport for me to get some good spares off!

New car coming soon.

Hello folks. Long time, no see. Having been on a 4 year classic car hiatus (had children, no funds for such frivolity!) the urge for a classic has slowly boiled up. So, i sold my motorbike and have bought a rather ratty 1958 Minor. Not taken receipt of it yet but i am looking forward to it. I had a ...

Re: Wishful thinking?

Les, that's madness. Surely that's the case for all concourse/best in class style competitions too then? I agree there is a vanity to it, but that is ingrained in almost all of us. It is a desire for external acknowledgement for something that we personally appreciate. I love the styling, simplicity...

Re: Wishful thinking?

Many Minors, that is all a matter of opinion. If your interpretation of dullness is based on how it drives, then yes, for sure, the Boxter is a hoot. My motorbike does 0-60 in less than 4 seconds but it is so dull (as an example). My interpretation is based around style. I think the Boxter is a plai...

Re: Wishful thinking?

Other than the SLK, they're all a bit dull though. Crazy though isn't it, how cheap "old" not classic cars are. I remember in 2007 i bought my Supra (i was 21!) It was a 1989 3 litre, non-turbo, manual. Good bodywork, good engine. I paid £600 for it. Now, 10 years on, they have appreciated...

Re: priming oil pump 1098

You could, if you have one handy, use a 3-in-1 oil canister (the wee handy ones), with engine oil in it as they have a short spout. You don't need a lot, and i found when i used a funnel, it made a bit of a mess. It is just the top banjo bolt that needs to come out, be careful of the washers, drop t...

Re: priming oil pump 1098

I asked the same thing on a Mini forum a couple of years back and dear old Roy suggested the above and it worked a treat. It was a 1215 (1098 with Hillman Imp pistons) highly strung engine that i bought used and untested so was horrified when i started it up and it rumbled horrendously. Roy to the r...

Re: Wishful thinking?

Hello, old head poking nose in! I have seen, since i still look on ebay for cars even though wife says no, the cost of most classic cars seems to have gone up a fair whack in the last few years. I sold my last Minor (a 1960 one) in 2013 for £1200 i think. Long mot, decent bodywork, nice interior etc...

Re: Is this normal?

There's something wrong with your set up then my friend. My set up is pretty similar to yours and i am averaging 30mpg with a 4.55 diff and standard gearbox so revs are quite high on the motorway at 60 (around 4000rpm). It's not the carb that will be causing that as such, it may be you have an air l...

Re: Is there another curtailment?

I must say, i've never been one for having a moan on here, but i think that is pretty extreme from the mods (love you guys really though) I understand that it does sometimes get a bit like a mob of abuse (bandwagon style), but i HATED (clearly as it's in caps!) on the vw t25 forum that you couldn't ...

Handily it cropped the image...not ideal!!
That said, it looks a bit likethis

Can't remember what it was from, but i would be inclined to use a Herald one if doing it again.

This is my air filter http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg488/callyspoy/ab5813cf798764a221cf3970bf04f862.jpg It has a k&n filter inside, is similar to Triumph Herald just a bit deeper. It works nicely though and retains some "period" look. My standard exhaust was rusty (with holes!) ...
