On my renault 4 the air intake could be positioned either over the manifold or away from it, and this was for summer or winter. My MMs2 has the old silencer type air intake, and there must have been many variations since then.
If the weather is too cold i imagine that could cause problems.

Re: Remember the scrappage scheme?
Unfortunate thing about the scrappage scheme was that it was a con by the main dealers. The £2000 knocked off the dealer price in exchange for your old banger was around the same amount a discounter was cutting the price. I remember Perry's had new fiat panda dynamic (1.2) for exactly £2000 off list...

Re: Fuel spill
You're right Alan. My problem is that I am so used to modern cars letting you keep pumping until full and it automatically cutting out that the tank over fills and spills near the end. It would be nice to be able to program the pump to deliver a measured dose. Not having a locking cap makes me paran...

Re: Radiator repair
Its relatively easy once you have the radiator out and dry. Just pinch the perforated tube and solder it with a soldering iron or torch. The brass takes to solder very well.

Re: oily plugs
I have belatedly come to see my folly. Spent half of today under the car to fit an undersize shell to the damaged big end (10thou) but found that of coarse the worn bearing is not round any more as the force is greatest at top of stroke. The 10thou under size shell went on fine but there's still loa...

Re: sender unit for splitty 1953
If you take the top off, the wire wound resistor that you see needs each side cleaning, so the pair of wipers can make contact. I used a nail file to scrape off the corrosion and the contact improved. The wire has an enamel coating. Once the sides are clean they are a bit shiny. The servisol didn't ...

Re: fuel Gauge split screen
I just scraped the oxides off the potentiometer and it now reads 86 ohm max. It's the one that came with a second hand series II tank. If you only get full deflection with 400 ohms then it would show a less than half empty tank when full. I've lost one of the slotted screws from the rectangular lid ...

Re: sender unit for splitty 1953
I have a sender that came with a second hand tank, but i kept the old sender when i swapped out the tanks. The petrol vapour is able to lubricate the potentiometer, and the second hand sender had been dry for many years so it makes intermittent contact. Even after a good dose of servisol the wipers ...

Re: fuel Gauge split screen
It's not really answering the original question; does the fuel gauge read full with 12V across it? The sender is a wire wound potentiometer that has no resistance on empty, with rising resistance as it approaches full. Also there is no voltage stabiliser. But how it is wired to the gauge is another ...

Re: Why O Why?
The "AA book of the car" published in 1970 states that all cars registered after december 31st 1964 must have front seat belts fitted (but no requirement to wear them). More recently the law requires that no child under the age of 3 travel in a car that is not fitted with seatbelts. This m...

Re: Brake fluid resistant sealer?
I put silicone in 20 years ago when i put in a new master cylinder, and replaced all the seals at the same time. I wish i had replaced all the lines too, as one later sprung a leak. I was advised that rubber that had been used with dot4 would need replacing as well as completely removing all the old...

Re: oily plugs
I have been looking for a good 948 for that sort of money for a few months now, and nothing has come up. The shells cost about £50, and undersize ones can be had for less. The rings are good (compression is ok). Only done a couple of thousand miles since the engine was rebuilt with new rings. To be ...

Re: oily plugs
Little update; replaced the big end shells with std size, and only one was damaged (3). The crank has worn at 3 too, so that piston still knocks under load. Disconnecting that plug silences the knock, but that's not a solution. When the weather gets better I am going to drop the sump again and measu...

Re: Morris Minor Series 2 - 803cc engine
All I know is the BMC workshop manual states "shimless, steel backed, white metal lined" for bearing type. Same as the side valve engine, but then the subsequent 948cc engine has "steel backed, lead-bronze, lead-indium plated surface: or steel backed, copper-lead, lead-tin plated surf...

Re: Morris Minor Series 2 - 803cc engine
The £800 quote was for me to give them the car, and they do the rest, and for me to source the parts, gaskets etc. If the crank needed regrinding they would do that too. My local garage, that i trust, would have used tk to do the work, so suggested i go direct to them. According to the manufacturer ...

Re: Morris Minor Series 2 - 803cc engine
These guys quoted me approx £800 to recon the crankshaft bearings for my sII; http://tkautoengineering.co.uk/ It depends on what needs doing, but as long as you supply the parts then the charge is for labour. They said they had worked on a morris minor recently, but they are not classic car speciali...
