Yes, they are rubbish. :(

(replaced another steering rack gaiter yesterday - IIRC it lasted about a year on the road)

Re: wax (oyl) on wax (oyl) off as mr miyagi would say!!!

Are you asking for a comparison between the various under-body anti-rust products? Used engine oil is free and reasonably effective but horribly messy and carcinogenic, and it can wash off in wet weather making roads dangerously slippy particularly for bikes. Not good. Underseal is horrible stuff - ...

Re: Intermittent Wipers

You can do that with just a 555, but I think it will quickly get out of sync because the speed of the wipers varies so much depending on how dry the screen is, how cold the grease is, the state of battery charge etc.

Adding a flip flop to the timer doesn't solve the parking problem.

Re: Intermittent Wipers

Perhaps you could make them self-parking first? The tricky part would be fixing up a SPDT microswitch in such a way that it opens when the wipers are not parked. Supply the motor from the common terminal, connect an ignition switched live to the NC terminal and the feed from the wiper switch to the...

Re: What's this inlet manifold off?

It is off a very rare Roman Cataphract 4cc 2 cylinder engine. A 3 stroke low maintenance engine requiring only a modicum of engineering skill to construct and maintain, these were the very first engines and only 6 are known to have been made. They were brought to the UK by the Romans circa 47AD by ...

Re: What's this inlet manifold off?

in case anyone didn't guess - the small bores are coolant circuit. You're right, and the blob on top seems to be a control valve for it. The smallest hole in the middle is a mounting hole. To access the head of the bolt/stud you would have to take the carb off and insert a socket in on an extension...

I've heard of those 'points booster' kits failing, but not the Pertronix/Lumenition contactless type. I prefer electronic on cars that do a lot of miles because adjusting the points gap is such a faff.

Here in the UK a company called Velleman does a kit that you can buy from Maplin:

I've not built one myself so don't know if it's any good.

Re: What's this inlet manifold off?

Only two ports, but perhaps they divide into four inside the head/block? I'm not sure what's going on with the two small holes in the middle. I'll go and have another look at it later today.

I found it near a farmyard so it's possible it could be off a tractor rather than a car.

Re: something serious...

If the spark plug seems OK when you take it out, the next step is to do a compression test. Could be a burnt/stuck valve. Very crude first check if you don't have a compression tester to hand is to turn it over on the starting handle (ignition off) and see if it gets difficult to turn four times in ...

Re: Bite the bullet

With that type you just put the stripped end of the wire through from the back and fold it over. When you push it in the bare strands of wire get trapped between the plug and socket.

You could try Coolex Heat Transfer on 0115 9423344. They recently re-cored a later radiator for me for £100 including the return postage. Took about a week from sending it off.
