just recently fitted a different diff. I removed the whole axle. put it on the bench, painted it all and renewed all the rear brakes. whilst off the car I replaced the spring bushes as well.

Best options are rebuild your current engine or give it a 948 transplant. You'll be very lucky to find another 803 that doesn't need some sort of rebuild. I have a 948 engine in my 1955 car, with 948 internals in the gearbox. 4.2 diff at the back. car sits nicely on the motorway at 65mph.
