Re: Clutch-ing for Answers
Could be a matter of adjusting the actuator rod, but also check the bushes on the relay shaft - if they are badly worn, there may be excess play. Also remove the rubber bung in the base of the gearbox bellhousing and peer in with a torch to check the condition of the release bearing; if it's worn do...

Re: smoothcase/ribbed gearbox
Whilst the 803cc smooth cased gearbox may be alright when driving with a light right foot. When driven in a normal manner the margin between alright and failure is narrow. When mated to a 1275cc engine I would consider that margin to be even narrower. The 803cc engine only gave out 30 bhp at most a...

Re: Morris as a daily driver.
Indeed. For daily motoring, Minors are easily upgraded with various enhancements, such as disc brakes, Midget 1275cc engine, telescopic dampers, alternator, spin-on oil filter, etc., that makes them as useable as any modern car. But even as standard, they can be fine as long as the overall condition...

Re: rear shocks
I fitted Gabriel telescopics all round on my Traveller back in the early 1990s, and they still perform well to this day.
Ideally, you should weld the upper crossmember in place, but I didn't, just bolted it up nice and tight and it's been fine.

Re: Morris as a daily driver.
They make great daily drivers! :) I've owned my 1970 Traveller since 1989 and have mostly used it as an everyday car to this day, in all weathers, and it now has 154,000 miles on the clock. It's been more reliable than some modern cars I've owned in that time. And of course, excellent parts availabi...

Re: Fitted new carb today......
A 948cc engine number will begin 9... while a 1098cc one will begin 10... Dizzy is usually fairly easy to read - it's on a flat area on the body; try scrubbing it with a fine wire brush. It should say 25D4 and a 5-digit part number, from which you can verify if it's correct for your engine: http://w...

Check that the piston rises and falls with no sticking; use your finger to raise it then drop it - you should hear a nice thunk as it hits the jet bridge.

Re: Re-assembling the front suspension - setting the height
I think the standard setting will be approx. 3" or so between the bottom of the lower trunnion with the kingpin fully dropped onto the lower bumpstop and the tip of the lower wishbone arm. I.e., you would need to use a jack to raise the lower arm by around 3" to enable you to fit the lower...

It looks similar to the Astrali type you used to be able to buy in many motor factors: https://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1280&bih=719&q=astrali+steering+wheel&oq=astrali+steering+wheel&gs_l=img.3..0j0i24.1516.6556.0.7096.22.10.0.1...

Re: Jacks.
Nowt wrong with the original jack, as long as the jacking points are in good condition, and the jack is well greased and you use it sensibly.
In fact, it's quite a good sturdy and efficient design, compared to some modern car jacks.

Re: The Distinctive Sound of a Morris Minor
The Elan Plus 2 130/5 had a Lotus gearbox made from Austin Maxi internals (presumably, in RWD configuration), while the Lotus Europa had a Renault 5-speed transaxle. I suppose one reason for the slow introduction of 5-speed gearboxes in this country is that motorway usage and speed limits are relati...

Aren't you forgetting the Austin Maxi of 1969, which had a 5-speed (albeit problematic) gearbox?

My Traveller's sometimes also sits on the stop for quite some time (although the odometer carries on working), then randomly springs back into action after a few miles, then it's fine after that!

I notice the Marina 1.3 exhaust has a similar 'hoop' over the rear axle, but also has an extra silencer on the rear section: http://i.ebayimg.com/t/MORRIS-MARINA-1-3-A-series-STAINLESS-STEEL-EXHAUST-various-models-/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/-scAAMXQ3LVR4sfr/$(KGrHqZ,!rQFHZ+9FDBrBR4sfrjzT!~~60_12.JPG Presu...

Re: The Distinctive Sound of a Morris Minor
I think it's mostly down to the exhaust - after all, the Mini (and other BMC cars) used the same engine and manifolds, but didn't 'parp' on the overrun, or at least, not as loudly. I have a 1275cc MG Midget engine in mine, with standard exhaust, and it has the same distinctive sound as it did when i...

Re: MAD282F Traflagar blue 2 door saloon
Perhaps whoever stole it thought it was a standard Minor, then later realised it was a bit special. In such a state of confusion (a heavily modified car being hard to 'ring' or sell on), they may have broken it for the parts...
