I understood that to change from my semaphores to flashing brake lights was regarded as an upgrade or modernisation and was therefore an acceptable modification. Although I think they are a bit more visible than the semaphores I am very aware of what is behind whilst using them as I dont think you c...

I, like you did not want to drill any extra holes or fit extra lights. I have blanked off the semaphores. The original front lights have been modified to incorporate a socket for a double filament bulb - 5w side light and 21w for the indicator, I also have the headlights with the side lights in. At ...

I quite agree, its impossible to see the marks. I wonder if it might be worth painting another pair of marks around the pulley a bit to perhaps line up with a timing cover bolt?

All my linings have been fitted by myself using the method described above and I have never had any problems with them. I used to buy them from a company that advertised in the exchange and mart many years ago, and I still have an unused set left! I suspect all of mine have asbestos in. Did you buy ...

Ignition Timing

What do others set the ignition timing at? I have always set to TDC with a lamp across the points, I have in the past set to maximum vacuum in the inlet manifold but can't remember noticing any difference! and I don't ever remember having the engine pink!

If it is only 'orange peel' you should be able to flat it out with wet and dry (wet) try 1000 grit and see how it goes, T cut then poish and you might be surprised how easy it is to remove! My paint was all done outdoors and had a variety of orange peel, over spray and runs but it scrubbed up quite ...

I popped in our local engine reconditioners to enquire about the front 'rope' type seal and if it was available. Chap said they didn't have one but produced this large rope type seal which is apparently fitted to Ford tractors in the same position ie the front crankshaft seal it looked very close to...

I seem to remember many years ago my front seal went through a 'leaking period' hellava mess, dissolved fan belt, terrible, dont know why it started, but it stopped and has been ok since! Strange!

Is this moly grease suitable for all the grease points? I have a tin of graphited grease (cant think what I bought it for) do you think this would be ok, particularly with the lubricating properties of graphite?

I changed the manifold studs on my Astra and was a bit generous with the copper slip and other lubes, my wife came home just as I was getting things up to temperature - she thought it was on fire there was that much smoke!

Fan Belt Length

Many years ago I fitted a water pump and a thermostat to my Morris to encourage it to warm up quicker (it worked) but I was never very happy about the length of belt this new setup required, it always seemed very difficult to get on. However as the car is now roadworthy after many inactive years I h...

So Much Quieter!

The Morris wasn't noisy but having just replaced the crank shells and the tining chain it now runs like a sewing machine! I think most of the noise was coming from the timing chain allowing the camshaft to clatter round as there was quite a bit of 'backlash' in the drive. The shells and chain have d...

I have just replaced the 'lower half' of the seal while I had the sump off for maintenance and yes it is a bit of a crude affair (it didn't leak before and I hope it wont now!) These are still available but a Ford tractor front seal would be very useable Do you know if the oil thrower in the timing ...

I tried lacquering chrome once and it wasn't very good (started to lift and trap moisture/salt) might be better if it was rubbed down (keyed) first!
Best thing is to keep it clean and in bad weather lightly greased or waxed

Changing Timing Chain (It's possible!)

Done it! After much grovelling I have replaced all crankshaft shells AND the timing chain with the engine in position and only the sump removed. I linked the new chain to the old and turned the flywheel to wind the new chain into position then removed the old one and joined the new one together. Thi...
