Re: Cylinder head removal 1098

"Many people say "advance until it pinks". ESM told me they have quite often seen cars set with ridiculous degrees of advance when that method has been used. Probably because it is quite hard to detect pinking on a static engine and it only presents itself under load on the road (whi...

Re: Tin can

Was quite commonplace - I recall my father's mechanic telling him on more than one occasion that he would have to 'put a patch on the exhaust' for the MOT.

Well, plenty of cars were patched up for MOT's in the past with tin can metal slathered over with underseal - as many serious restorers have found subsequently! :-?

Re: Cylinder head removal 1098

The issue is if you need to replace the thermostat you cannot get the housing off without removing the heater pipe which means undoing two heads nuts, not a good idea. Earlier 948 engines look to have a copper pipe on the manifold side, assume can be fitted to the 1098. Just missed one on ebay. Gue...

Re: Cylinder head removal 1098

Can't see the point of replacing the pipe with a rubber hose. All the cylinder head nuts have to come off anyway to remove the head. As long as you re-fit the pipe (and the engine steady bar) before the nuts on re-assembly then there is no issue.....

Re: Cylinder head removal 1098

Ah, I see now! Thank you. I thought you were referring to the other end where the heater hose attaches.......... :-?
I'm glad I have the SII arrangement where the heater hose runs along the engine bay floor - no bracket and no faffing about with cylinder head nuts 8)

"There are longer studs available and then you can have 2x nuts with the heater pipe bracket in between. I tried this and found that it did not work because the end of the heater pipe would not properly engage with the rubber hose." I don't understand this. What was actually stopping the ...

Re: Damaged radiator

"I had to file the “ radiator securing holes” somewhat to allow the new radiator to fit correctly." I fitted a new radiator recently and wondered if I was going to have to do the same. However, after much faffing about I did get it to fit eventually, although it involved a lot of cursing ...

Re: Damaged radiator

Is the pulley definitely fully home on the waterpump pulley and plate fitted on outside of fan? Measure from a fixed point on engine to fan blad on yours and compare, if the same then take some radiator location measurements. Also is the radiator the same thickness number of tubes visible through f...

Re: Damaged radiator

I wonder whether the original blade broke as a result of hitting the radiator or hit the radiator as a result of breaking? I have seen fan blades suffer from metal fatigue and crack at the base of the blade. The act of trying to draw air in would then force the blade out and it could strike the rad...

Re: Combining Accuspark and Sparkrite.

I don't think this old chestnut will ever be resolved. Electronic ignition - fit and forget..........until it fails (and they all will eventually) and you are stranded in the middle of BFN. Standard points - check and maintain as per the manual. If they do fail, you have a good chance of coaxing the...

Re: Alfred's First Winter Outside

55 years - wow, that's good going! I had a traveller kept outdoors back in the 80's, soon had fungi growing on the wood, moss in the window channels and before long the back doors fell off. Then it failed the MOT on multiple rust issues and had to be scrapped :-( I did save the engine though which c...

I have had insurers get difficult about my Minor being my only car in the past, which doesn't make sense as I am on a restricted mileage anyway so I don't see what difference it makes as long as I stay within the mileage limits - I don't use it for business purposes as I am retired....... a friend w...

Re: Can’t get my daughters car to start

Thank you for the clarification, Liam. I have to say that in 40 years of consistently driving Morris Minors I have never experienced carb icing. But then it doesn't usually get that cold down here (Cornwall). My point was that Elaine does not need to adjust the mixture setting on the carb from winte...
