Re: Rear Springs Hitting Chassis Rail

It's no good grinding away the flange if the bump stops are only half an inch from the chassis. You can cut an inch off the bump stops but this will increase the strain on the weak springs.

Re: Rear Springs Hitting Chassis Rail

The problem comes with return postage, they are heavy. I just decided to put it down to experience. The Jones Spring replacements cost 3 times as much as the ESM ones, but they are made to the original specification.

Re: Rear Springs Hitting Chassis Rail

I agree Phil. If the new and original springs when fitted have the same arc height then the difference in length of the new springs will push out the hangers and hence reduce the spring end clearance. Increasing hanger height is not the solution. This is treating the effect not the cause and may ha...

Re: Rear Springs Hitting Chassis Rail

I had the same trouble 3 months after fitting new springs from my usual supplier. I then ordered new springs from Jones springs; they make them to order. Also, I now have the correct gap between the bump stops and chassis. I did try 25mm longer spring hangers but felt that it became unstable when co...

Looks like part of a tab off a tab washer. I would probably drop the sump for a quick look.

Re: Brakes!

Have you adjusted the handbrake cable at the handbrake? The workshop manual advises against it. If you remove too much slack from the cable it prevents the rear cylinder pushing the shoes out.

I always lift mine behind the front wheels just inboard of the A post and just outboard of the front, rear spring hanger.

Another thumbs up for Capt Tolley's, I sealed a leak on the caravan seam. You may have to apply it several times.

I don't know what make of rings you have but the top ring usually has a centre dot to mark which face is up. Also its usually the second ring which has a lip[attachment=0]

Re: Disc brakes for lower maintenance?

The only downside for discs is that the front wheels require more cleaning due to the brake dust.

Re: 948cc cruising speeds

Is there any handy way of finding out what diff I have other than taking it out? Put the car in neutral on axle stands, mark a rear tyre and the prop shaft, rotate the rear wheel one full turn and count the turns of the prop shaft. One full turn of a wheel should result in the prop shaft rotating 4...

Re: Brake shoe thickness

IIRC the manual states that the handbrake cables should not need adjustment. If someone has tightened them up in the last 50 years to remove play, you will never be able to adjust the rear correctly as the cylinders will not be able to push the shoes against the drums. It may be worth slackening off...

Re: solid brake pedal

As your likely to be bleeding the brakes, it may be worth checking the condition of the rear flexible hose, they have been known to perish inside which causes a blockage and has been reported to act as a one way valve, as pointed out above.

Mine is the opposite, the arrow denotes the direction of flow, so towards the rear axle.
