Re: Hair pulling engine problem

And are all the valves going up and down as they should? Run it without the cover to see. Also test the compressions - even just with the starting handle (Ign OFF) - are they all similar - or do some feel 'easy'? Could be head gasket - in fact - quite likely.... Spitting back indicates an Ignition e...

Re: Rear wheel revolution

Perfectly normal - although the 'clanking' may indicate something a bit loose..... It's what a differential does - it puts the drive to whatever wheel will rotate more easily basically to allow the car to go round corners easily. Hence when trying to climb an icy hill - only one wheel spins. A 'lock...

Re: starting up -Float chamber lid off?

Don't put emery near the plugs! An eggcup of fuel down the carb is the quick and easy way to check if fuel is the problem....do it before disturbing anything else!

Re: Hair pulling engine problem

Increase the idle speed....and look for an air leak. But backfiring could be stuck valve - certainly indicates un-burned fuel in the exhaust. Is the carb piston free to rise and fall ? The idea that it will start without choke suggests flooding - does the fuelpump do a few clicks - and then stop whe...

Re: starting up -Float chamber lid off?

Highly unlikely  The pump and float are working exactly as they should. Just to confirm - put an eggcup of petrol directly down the carb inlet and crank it. If still no life - look to the Ignition which is by far the most likely problem. Clean and gap the points - clean the plugs - and check a...

Most seem to suggest 'Distributor Doctor' as best quality - and be sure to get a 'red' rotor arm and perhaps points and condenser while ordering.....

Just use a standard Minor starter - take it in to the Autoparts place (or Hellfrauds if desperate) and ask for an exchange,

Re: Headlamps not working

If the lamps are not lit in either dip or main setting - then it's likely to be either cables pulled off at the dipswitch - or at the lights switch. Fuses are not involved as others have explained. Use the much better wiring diagram at the top of this section. Haynes is hopeless - if you want a Morr...

Re: electronic dizzy - help

Seems to me you haven't given this dizzy a fair trial, most unlikely it is faulty - unless it has been wired up incorrectly. It is obviously installed incorrectly - the vacuum advance unit should normally stand pretty much vertically. You probably need to reset the drive shaft inside the engine - fr...

Re: Brake pipe union threads

So - you are now going to make even more of a pig's ear of it all by fitting in some Metric pipe connections?? This makes no sense at all and could lead to disaster - perhaps not with you if you remember what is where -but with a future mechanic/owner. I strongly advise to keep it standard and NOT g...

Starter motors (and dynamos) are sometimes given away free -I've had to bin several of each after failing to find takers for them - free!

It should read 70psi when cold.....But as you say - the hot pressure is what counts - should be at least 50psi at 50 mph in top gear,

Re: oil leaking into rear drum

Seal is a very staight forward job - once you get the hub off. It should just pull off (maybe bolt the wheel on to get extra purchase) after undoing the nut - which of course is LH thread on the nearside. If you don't have a Workshop Manual - download it free via Google !

It's a gamble - and then you need to consider if the gauge needs to be fed from the 10 volt regulated supply...Thye usually do - if you want an accurate reading.

How did the wiring 'come loose' ?? You must only ever join same colour wires to each other at any joint in the system.

Re: First Time Engine Rebuild

The pressed steel rockers are much better - stick with them. Compare each one for thickness - there may be enough variation there for you to mix and match to get a better alignment. But filing will be easy - just keep it square and of course you may need some washers to make up any gaps. But frankly...

Re: juddering in London

Water ingress will clear away all the carbon and muck - hence the idea to dribble water into a running engine if it is pinking/running on. Used to be Redex that was used for this -but it always puzzled me how adding more hydrocarbon could hope to remove long standing carbon deposits.

Yes - good idea - remove the fan belt. Sometimes the bottom pulley starts to break up and can make odd noises as it dies.
