Tuning for Speed - Phil Irving
When I built my supercharged Holden motor as described in this section under 'Other hobbies and passions', in my post of Mon June 19 2017, I had access to a copy of this publication. It prooved an invaluable source of information. I have since tried to obtain a copy for many years without success. N...

Re: Buying a Series MM
Have attached drawing of flywheel mods. Fortunately I have recorded about every dimension on a MM block including valve centres, head stud locations, bore locations and just about every threaded hole - they are all referenced to a common point that being the centre of the No. 1 head stud threaded ho...

Here is the second part re the top end: TUNING A SIDE VALVE MINOR – TOP END – June 2014 On my motors I have opened up the ports to a maximum and fitted Nissan EXA turbo exhaust valves to both inlets and exhausts. They have a head dia. of 30.5 mm. as against 28.0 for a standard valve which is an incr...

Re: Buying a Series MM
http://www.mmoc.org.uk/Messageboard/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=63865 The standard MM motor is a very understressed and breathing restricted motor. The crankshaft and conrods are very robust.and with minor mods will allow the motor to be tuned for performance in various stages up to the modified motor i...

Re: Our other hobbies and passions
I have had a bit of a dabble in live steam. A 5" gauge Crampton 4-2-0 loco built by Brian Arridge. I purched his plans and followed the construction series in the 'Engineering in Miniature' magazine. Main difference the tender water tank and coal hopper were made from brass sheet with over 1200...

Re: Our other hobbies and passions
Back in the early 60's I fitted a GMC 2/71 diesel blower onto a grey motor in an FC Holden. The Holden grey was a 2.2 litre OHV six similar to the OHV Vauxhall six. It also had the best Waggott head I could afford, steel bearing caps, overbored, Myers headers, a Moss box from a 3.8 MK.2 Jag with 28%...

Re: Master cylinder.
It certainly looks like a remote filler hose at the rear however why would you need an overflow? I have a remote reservoir installed on my MM and it does not have an overflow nor does it need one. Seems something of a mystery.

Re: Master cylinder.
The hole is in a curved section towards the top. I thought a drill bit would have tended to run off a bit and not produce such a clean neat hole without ragged edges as the pic shows.

Re: Alta porn?
Got plenty more porn like that – only need a thread to post it on. There is a point where you can have too much vac in the crankcase as I found with my Series E, when I blocked the oil filler and relied only on air getting past the scroll. When the donk was dismantled there was heaps of mayonnaise m...

Re: Alta porn?
Rob This is my answer to scroll oil leaks - guaranteed to work When I built my side valve motor I decided to attack the problem of rear crank oil leaks and came up with the solution outlined. I chose to replace the tappet cover with a machined alloy one with a fitting to accept 10 mm. oil proof hose...

Re: MM gearbox
The g'box of a Series E and MM are identical except for the rear housing refered to as 'Casing - speedometer drive' in the manual. The mounting lugs are different and possibly the speedometer drive gear.

Re: Toque settings for MM head
Rob I use grade 10 (class 12.9) nuts with 5.0 mm. thick washers made from Vew V155 steel. I did this originally on the aftermarket Kleinig alloy head to spread the load and prevent the nuts damaging the alloy boss. I still use the same washers on the iron head. I think this would be OK for your Alta...

Re: Toque settings for MM head
Phil My figures were for a MM head stud being 10 mm. dia. and newly made for the MM motor and using new grade 10 nuts. Any suspect threads in the block were fitted with 'Re Coil' thread inserts. These figures are not necessarily related to an A series motor. Not having info on the A series motor I a...
