Re: Differential overhaul

Got the rebuilt diff, now a 3.9:1, back yesterday. Here is the shocking truth:- IMG_20221024_175315384_HDR.jpg The carrier has split apart. No wonder the half shaft broke! Whether this is cause, or effect, I don't know, but one of the diff bearings had certainly gone. I've been hearing a rhythmic ru...

Re: Forum Activity

A great many of the people on the facebook group are normal people, but it does attract those that wouldn't survive within the Forum pages, for various reasons. It is a place where some (many?) expect instant gratification from their questions. Some of them don't look up anything themselves and jus...

Re: Forum Activity

If it's any consolation, it's the same with other organisations that I am a member of. There is an active website and / or forum, well used, full of useful info. Someone (probably well-meaning) sets up a Facebook page for it, users cluster around it like moths around a lightbulb, and half the websit...

Re: Differential overhaul

So is replacing diff bearings and swapping crown wheels a no-go?

I have a good 3.9 crown wheel and pinion on a cage that's worn, and a good 4.22 crown wheel and pinion on a good cage, with a damaged bearing.

Re: Differential overhaul

2 years on, time to revive this thread. A halfshaft broke on Saturday. I've got the axle off the car & the diff (a 4.22) out, so that it can be cleaned up properly. However, the diff is very stiff. A quick inspection showed why. IMG_20221005_212217017.jpg IMG_20221005_212221922.jpg original_cfb3...

Re: Old radio component?

Yes, I think you're right. I didn't look at the photo close up, but now I have they are clearly coils wound around the outside. It's a tuning coil.

Re: Old radio component?

It probably is a capacitor of some sort, possibly twin ganged, variable, for use in a valve set.

Re: Gearbox woes

It is a bit quieter now, so I think it was the gears bedding in. I had transferred all the innards from a cracked bell housing to a sound one, and I guess they just meshed in slightly differing positions compared to when they were in the old one.

Re: Rear hub gasket

To eliminate any confusion and to ensure that the rear hub bearing has the correct lateral loading between hub and half-shaft the thickness of the hub gasket which determines the amount of loading should be correct . It cannot be assumed that the gasket supplied is the right thickness. Too thin and...

E85 fuel

I know there's been a lot of discussion on high ethanol fields on here, and I don't really think I want to reopen that discussion. What I would like to know is if any Minor owners on here, in France or elsewhere, have used E85 fuel in their Minors? If so, what changes have you made to the fuel syste...

Re: Can I mix E10 with E5 petrol?

Assuming you have Ethanol compatible fuel lines etc (need that for E5 and E10) apart from it using more you shouldn't notice any difference by using E10. SAE R6 fuel line is compatible with E10 fuels:- https://www.continental-industry.com/en/solutions/fluid-handling/passenger-cars/powertrain/fuel-s...

Re: Can I mix E10 with E5 petrol?

I bought a bottle of Lucas Ethanol Stabiliser today. Allegedly treats 300l of fuel, for £9.99. In other news, I spoke to Burlen Fuel Systems today, and they confirmed that any carb seal kits & fuel pump diaphragms sold by them in about the last 10 years are E10 proof. As I have fitted new seals ...

Re: Head gasket failure-3rd in 2½ years

The gauge sender is in the head. It screws into the head just under & to the rear of the thermostat. I have tested it out of the head, as described above, and it seemed fairly accurate set against a thermometer.

Re: How to post a photo

Without wishing to stray too far OT, I suspect Facebook has taken a lot of attention. I prefer the forum, as the problem with Fb is things go viral very rapidly, and before you know it, it's out of control. As for our ultimate fate, well we are all destined for the great scrapyard in the sky sooner ...

Re: How to post a photo

For that to work I think you need to upload a photo rather than a link to one on the internet. It says somewhere in the FAQ that you need to link to a photo. Where would I upload a photo to? Let's try this:- 33002_Eridge_IMG_20210904_144723752_HDR.png Ok, so an attachment works. Now, how do get tha...
