Re: Thread sizes

Mike, The complete chart (excl the MM SV) is on Page 1 of this post, which I used to update as new information became available, but with the new (unnecessary imo) restrictions on editing after a few hours, that is no longer possible. Mods, Could we start a 'sticky' with just the table and ideally b...

Re: 948 tuning

The clutch fitted to the 918SV, 803 and 948 are all the same basic design and were 6.25" 6-spring clutches. From the BMC Workshop Manual, the 6 clutch springs varied and are listed as: 918 Side valve - all blue 803 OHV - all blue 948 OHV - early 3 x blue and 3 x yellow/green 948 OHV - later all...

Re: Tyre Sizes

The original cross ply tyre size of 5.20 x 14 is equivalent to a radial ply size of 145/80R14. The Minor wheel width is only 3", so this is the limiting factor in tyre width that should be fitted, and 145 is generally accepted as the maximum tyre width for a 3" rim. Many fit 155/80R14 and ...

Re: Brake valve limiter with discs

We have the 'adjustable' version of the Mini valve fitted in conjunction with Metro 4-pot front calipers. Without the limiter, the rear brakes will (just) lock under heavy braking, so being able to adjust this out works well for us. I don't have any data for the Ford based conversions. Does anyone k...

Re: Traveller 5 speed gearbox,

I would suggest using the EP 75W/90 multigrade oil. It gives you get the benefit of the lighter oil when cold, but still gives full protection when hot as well. I use the same oil in the Toyota T50, and it is excellent. Hot/cold, the changes are slick and quiet! The T50 does not use the EP variety, ...

the quirks of Moggy motoring
Probably more the quirks of 1950's technology motoring. The Mini was even worse for misting up in the 60's! Once Ford developed 'through flow ventilation' in the Cortina, the misting problem was really resolved.

Re: Windows steaming up.......

Ours is in a heated, dry garage, but once outside in cold damp air the inside of the front screen mists up very quickly. A heated front screen is the sure way of preventing condensation on the inside of the screen. Not cheap, and needs a relay and additional heavy duty cables to feed it, but it work...

Re: IGN light on, fitted with alternator

Hi and welcome to the MMOC Message Board. 2 quick checks before diving into fault finding. Both related to is it charging? An essential tool for any classic car maintenance is a multimeter, that includes a DC scale that reads up to 16-20v. With an alternator it is almost certain to be wired negative...

Re: Building a 1275

The 'big bore' 1098 exhaust should be fine for a standard(ish) spec 1295 Marina engine, but I would think that the HIF44 would be a more suitable carburettor, especially if you envisage making some tweaks in the future?

Re: standard or 4.5 diff.

If you are anywhere near Oxford, we have a full-length 'stand in' depth pit, with lights, air etc., that you are welcome to use. It's warm and dry too!

Assuming the replacement axle is near to a 'straight swap', then 1/2 day's work should see it done, but allow 1 day to be sure!

Re: Longevity of front tie bars

As Phil has already said, the original tie bar thread is 3/8" BSF, and uses a 3/8"BSF castle nut - please look at the list of thread and spanner sizes, torque settings etc. in the 'Mechanical' section under 'Thread Sizes'. Not sure where 7/16" UNF comes from? Getting the split pin in ...

Re: Big bore exhaust

Which engine is the system designed to fit? It looks like you will need to rejig the beginning part of the pipework to get it to fit the exhaust manifold - once that is done the system will (definitely should) fit using the standard mounts. Make sure that you use the mount that fits before the swan ...

Re: Rear heated window (Traveller)

Going back to the earlier part of this thread, and whether to use a relay or not, is the current draw of ~6A for the Traveller rear heated screen for each screen, or for both screens in total? With a total of 6A you could probably get away with a switch, but I would not, and if it is 6A per each scr...

Re: Riley 1.5 brake conversion

Phil, Do you have details of the Riley 1.5 rear brakes? Drum diameter, shoe size and cylinder bore diameter? I presume they are the same leading/trailing shoes set up as the standard Minor?

I will add it to the brake design model I have, and publish the whole set of results.

Re: Riley 1.5 brake conversion

Which bore master cylinder is fitted? The 948 engined cars were originally fitted with a 7/8" bore, and the 1098 had a 13/16" bore. I am not sure if the early 7/8" master cylinder is still available, but if the later smaller bore unit is fitted to an early car, then the pedal pressure...

Re: Riley 1.5 brake conversion

Moggiegeek, Yes, the 7/8" front cylinders will reduce the pedal pressure for the same braking effort, but, as has already been said it will increase the brake bias towards the front as well. What rear cylinders are fitted, and what rear drum diameter and master cylinder bore diameter do you hav...

Phil, I thought that the front cover for all the 'ribcase' gearboxes, 1098 and 1275, has the same part number? I have 22G118 as the part number. If that is not correct, please let me know, as I quite often post this information, believing it to be correct! The 948 'smoothcase' gearbox front cover wa...

I seem to remember these battery terminals getting a very poor reputation when they were 'standard' production.
