The regulator could click as the points opened and closed but not to the extent of the fuel pump. Regular clicking would indicate an adjustment issue as the points open and close to regulate the battery charge.

Yes, but at what price? Tesco sell 30 or 40 (I can't remember which) for Lawnmowers in their gardening section... last lot I bought was about £2.99/litre...

To help compensate for unleaded fuel (not an issue when the manual was written) 15 thou is advisable for the exhaust valves, which I believe is specified in manuals for later cars with the same engine (Metro etc...)

You cannot assume the engine was at the correct temp. As said already, you need to give it a darn good blast to clear it out first (the high hydrocarbon reading is due to unburnt fuel which is synonymous with a sooty engine).
