Re: Leaking...
For the diff, my experience is that they do not and should not leak unless there is something wrong. What is the year of the car? The casing and diff units varied over time. Use Jizer to thoroughly clean the whole thing and then determine where the leak originates -from the vent, filler, drain plug ...

Re: My Engine won't stop !
Just for healthy debate, I've seen the problem with timing too advanced and mixture too weak. Best thing is a general service and set everything to correct parameters. Check the coolant!

Re: Spacers for the wires in brake lights?
Not sure what the original poster meant, but some cars DO have a small disc that holds the wires apart after they exit the holder and before they go through the rubber cover. He could also have been meaning the little bit inside the holder that holds the contacts in place to alogn with the bulb. Agr...
Polishing
For many years I have used well known branded polishes and waxes in conjunction with soft cloths and the tried and tested elbow grease to get the car looking reasonable. However, I am now bestowed with the gift of a professional variable speed polisher. It looks a bit like an angle grinder, but with...

Re: Spacers for the wires in brake lights?
Do you mean the spacer inside the lamp holder, or the one that is sometimes found outside the lamp holder? If the former, then just fit a new lamp holder. If the later, then the absence of the spacer should not stop the lights from working unless you have serious damage to the wires - the insulatkio...

Re: Hot days
When the tyres melt. Take it easy and you'll be fine. Open all the windows. If the engine starts to get a bit warm then you can turn the heater on full to help disipate the heat. You'll suffer, but the car will be OK. As long as it has been serviced properly, the standard Minor has plenty of cooling...

Re: replacing caliper on disc brake
If you don't fancy the repair kits yourself, there are plenty of places that will recondition callipers, just post them off and get back what looks like a new pair. Slight problem if you need to drive the car, so it might be worth getting a spare pair from a scrap yard / ebay and then send off which...

Re: Rear engine oil seal replacement
There is no rear oil seal. Instead there is an achcimedes screw thread and as the crank revolves it winds the oil back into the sump - in theory. Small oil leaks are common. Excessive oil leaks tend to indicate very worn parts. If the oil is dripping off the ssmp then it may be the gasket there, but...

Re: Brake lights
There is no adjustment on the switch. Most likely that the new switch is faulty. Also, a slim chance that there is air in the switch. It is worth priming the switch whilst holding it upside down, and also make sure that the union into which the switch is screwed has fluid up to the top of the thread...

Yes! They are a simple push fit onto the spindle. If they are stuck then careful use of a screwdriver can be of assistance.

Re: Boot Carpet
I've never seen a standard car with a carpet in the boot. The Traveller has a different lining, but Saloons are just black plywood, but there's nothing wrong with fitting any scrap of carpet. The Convertible and Saloon boots are the same shape.

Re: Topping up rear dampers?
BMC's advice is definitely the "right" way to do it, but I've been doing it on the cars for thirty years and never had any problems. Any top up required should be absolutely minimal. Any more than that suggests a leak that is probably visible. It's still a good idea to change the oil once ...

Re: Floor panel/heat shield
The modern replacements do not contain asbestos, but you don't know how old your one is, or what it's made from. You can buy both the heat shield (white material) and the cover (metal, bolted to floor) easily from the usual suppliers.

Re: Gauge kits
If you go for mechanical gauges then you will need to be careful to not bend/break the capillary tubes. Electrical gauges are a lot more forgiving, and the wires fir through a smaller hole too. However, each to their own, the choice is yours. JLH have fitted some very nice white gauges to some of th...

Re: getting the steering wheel off
Glad that you're looking for the correct socket - do not be tempted to use a chisel or similar, it will ruin the nut. I'll check the correct size later, but for the time being.... (a) disconnect the battery, (b) remove the horn push, (c) Loosen the nut but do not remove it, (d) strike the wheel from...

Re: Two general lubrication questions...
The best antifreeze for a Minor is the genuine bluecol traditional a/f. It may require flushing every few years, but the modern long life preparations aren't really suited to our engines and hoses. I was sceptical of this until I tried a modern variety and found that I was losing water. Pressure tes...
