Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie
Without sounding pompous, what you mean is a Plug weld. This is used to replicate spot welds when a resistance type spot welder is not available. It's ideal along factory seams where you are able to clamp either side of the hole you have drilled or where you are able to physically press the two pane...

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie
You clearly have a better idea than the previous welders of your car, your planning on some tuition! Yes a butt welded join is preferable, however butt welding two pieces of 18 gauge or thinner steel requires some patience and skill to do well. This is where a lap or joggled join is more preferable....

Re: 56 Split-Screen Coupe BARN FIND!
Hot soapy water followed by a cutting compound and then lots of wax. The compound will reduce the visible rust by removing any staining from the paint. The wax will help prolong the finish.

Thats what I thought. Can no one in the MMOC lend you one to take a pattern? Find it hard to believe everyone has a front pipe cobbled together from flexi.

I had it in my head, for some reason that the exhaust was the same as the later cars with the exception of the front pipe?

When you say you are having valves made, are you commissioning someone to make new to a pattern or using blanks? Only the second option would seem more economical.

You got out here, good on you James. Slightly different to home isn't it!
Recently started a family so I'm afraid trips to car shows are somewhat outside the budget for the time being. I have a 49 Low Light that I will eventually restore but for now I'm a keyboard car guy.

The weather certainly won't be helping but if it's still soft after a month I would be talking with the painter.

Re: barrie's project
I hate that moment when the gas runs out and you try to just finish the last past before realising it looks terrible. There are not that many modern panel beaters with the patience for a decent restoration, let alone admit that it's not what they thought it would be. The finished car will be a credi...

I've just pulled a pair of these from a scrap low light. They are no use for my 49, are they any good for the someone to take patterns from?

Re: 57 Saloon, rotten!
I would be thinking about clamping or screwing the rear valance in place using the boot lid to line it up. That should help stop anything moving while you weld the rest of your repairs.

Re: 1964 Saloon... How bad is too bad?
If you can't already then start with a welding course. You need to be proficient in plug welding as well as being able to seam weld butt joints etc. Whilst MIG is essentially point and squirt it still requires some skill. You will also need to brace up that body so it keeps it's shape. It's a good i...

I had the same issue with Hadrian front wings. After massaging the top curve with the bolts loose to bring it down and then clamping in position (while ensuring the the wing still lined up with the sill finisher etc) I still had to skim the tops of the doors to level the gap.

Re: How much is too much welding?
With respect Shane, how would you know? There are several aspects when judging the quality of a welded repair, how it looks when lathered up in layers of bitumen is only one of them. All I am saying is that if your spending that sort of money it would pay to educate yourself on what you want when th...
