Re: help morris gold engine ID

, the car was never on the road (so I am told) since this engine was fitted but looks to have a leaking core plug Is the core plug pushed out (if so - then likely to have stood with water & no antifreeze). Fitting a new one is often all you need to do. If it's corroded through, then I'd be high...

Re: Tax ??

Just paid to tax Wifey's car for 1st October - and the system says that there will be no disc to display. As regards tax disc being cancelled as soon as the car is sold - this has been massively underpublished! Try reading any car adverts in ~3 weeks time - the majority will say how much tax is left...

Re: Grease points

Gave the required 4 strokes to the grease points approaching the rear wheels. No overspill there either - could they be short of grease and need more? ?? Really not sure as to where you mean with those! At the rear, there is back end of prop (UJ) and handbrake cables... as regards how long to keep ...

Re: front brake disc conversion

There ares some budget methods for DIY disk conversion, but to be honest you need to know what you're doing before playing with brakes. Bigger front drums - much better than small ones! (948 were 7", Minor 1098 were 8", Wolseley/Riley 1500 were 9"..) with 9" front drums, you can ...

Re: Transmission stuck in 4th gear

I've had this once - also when trying to reverse (off mum's drive). I managed to get the side plate off the gearbox and manipulate the gear hub (synchro hub) out of gear. (with front of car on wheel ramps & working from underneath) I'm not sure what / or why mine played up, so I've no idea if yo...

If anyone want to look at it and needs a second opinion - I'm happy to go along.
(I've got no room / time for any more projects myself!)

Re: Mysterious exploding battery

refitted the plugs & attempted restart From the description it was the 'trying to start' with a run down battery that makes me think of a blocked vent. I've not come across a blocked vent myself but anything is possible. If engine does turn over you get an initial big current spike which then r...

Re: HOW DO I REMOVE THIS BOLT?

If you are just replacing the springs no need to remove the drop link
He's replacing the dampers..
However, yes - if you're only doing the springs it's possible to leave the damper mounting arm connected.

Re: Brake lines flaring

there's 2 options for the pipe at rear of m/c T-piece 1st option (not so good) is to remove the gearbox tunnel cover, cut the floor back, removing a triangle piece to give more finger access, but still covered by the tunnel cover. 2nd option - disconnect the brake pire at rear axle flexi hose. Remov...

they never do cater for very tall fat people We do cater for tall / fat people (I'm around 20 stone at the moment..) plenty of tall people have Minors (it's not the Mini club) but probably not a standard pick up as at 6 foot tall they are just at my limit. If you have long legs you'd want to make a...

Behind the speedo was awful with burnt wires touching each other and bare end
That's only the damage you can see! I'd really recommend to go for a new loom.

Re: Blown head gasket - best replacement?

As your mechanic is experienced, he (or she?) will look at the failed gasket and look at the block & head at the weak point to see if there's any obvious damage. If there's distortion on the block surface, it's possible to see that using a ground flat bar. I've had the top of a block skimmed onc...

Re: Stuttering when cornering

2 thoughts from me

1) fuel level in carb float bowl is very low
2) the 12v wires to coil / dizzy are slightly broken / making poor connection (and the conrnering G-force makes them disconnect)

Re: Rebuild saloon from scratch!

It's now less easy to find a good panel beater (and expensive due to the amount of hours needed) but getting the dent repaired by a panel beater is a much better option compared to filler. If it's a modern car and destined to arrive at the scrap yard 5 to 8 years after a repair, then filler is a nec...

Re: Brake lines flaring

Sorry to send some bad news, but I really wouldn't recommend to re-use those pipe nuts! If/when the pipe nut is overtightened, the end of the pipe nut flares out. If they were less deformed it wouldn't matter to re-use them but generally if the pipe nut is flared out at the end, don't put it on a ne...

Re: Bubbles in coolant, possible head gasket problem

Grease on the gasket isn't proven to help at all - some will swear by it, but others say it adds more risk of early failure. I used it when young and impressionable, as it was recommended word of mouth. Since working in engineering and mixing with those who really know their stuff, I don't do it! Wh...
