Many a happy hour wasted on this crank. Then it blew the rear main bearing cap off and wrecked it. Lesson? Making it run is cheap, making it run really well can be veeeeery expensive. I'd never bother to do it again for a road car since the return for my time was not worth it. Getting the flywheel b...

I've got a late MM block here that I bought years ago. None of the head bolts appear to go through into anything but metal. No waterways or oilways pierced Might it be gunk from the threads being boiled and squirting back up the stud? I had thought about re-bolting the engine when I came to rebuildi...

How about drilling the rear main cap for a tiny bore capilliary pipe so that it runs into the gap round the scroll seal. Connect it up via a collector canister and a tapping right into the intake manifold so that it draws the oil off under any light throttle loading?

A neighbour bought a new capilliary gauge without the adaptor and found the bulb end too long to go in without bottoming on the casting. Guess what he did?

First correct answer wins a file and a puddle of ethanol fluid.

I have a running USHM2 engine and box here in the shed. There are a few about plus the Morris 8 engines and boxes which are almost identical.

My aeroplane has right-hand threads on both sides and came with Nyloc nuts. :o  Drilling for splitpins in case-hardened steel is a right PITA but worth the effort in this case.

I've found 2!!! Sadly, they are both right-hand threaded. I'll keep looking, though, and let you know what I can find. Have you thought about getting some cut? Ought to be quite simple to do. PS Much coarser thread than Midget/M1000 nuts. Are you sure that the MM was left-hand threaded on the other ...

So, 2 front nuts from an MM would do?
I'll have a good look through the garage. Fairly certain that I've got some and then If you send me your postal address I'll get them round to you. Might take a while, though!!

PS I have a Morris 8 engine/box in my 1935 MG pick-up (Doooooon't ask!) that was replaced by the MM as the tow-car for the aeroplane.

They'll have cut a knotch out of the underside of the crossmember where it goes over the gearbox. Almost everything else is the same. You'll need engine, box, propshaft (Hmmmmm, maybe not?), starter, exhaust manifold (different bore and angle) and I expect the clutch linkage is quite different since...

Just curious.....what colour interior have you got and are there any pics you could post me? We've got the 49 lowlight tourer and the boss doesn't want the red leather interior that I bought from Newton....she wants the original tan with coloured piping.

These were designed for supercharged engines so it might be almost as expensive to make a Shorrocks-blown alloy headed A as to make a BMW headed one.

Bloody good fun for as long as it lasted, though! :D :D
Image
Midget 1967 thin-flanged blocks came as standard with EN40B Nitrided crank and Cooper S rods. Pretty unbreakable but rarer than hens teeth. (I've only got 2!! ) I'd guess that you'd then need to get an ARP bolt set and centre strap to hold the crank in place for fear of the engine letting go ...

If it helps, the Cooper S standard dissy (40819, IIRC) has the same max advance as the MM so you can time it to TDC in the same way as the MM and still get the same max advance when running at speed. Ought to keep you safe from blowing the engine. The advance curve of the S is quite rapid so you mig...

Rostyle wheels use a steeper taper than ordinary Mog wheels. Probably 10 degrees difference, easily enough to knacker the wheels AND nuts. Some Mog wheelnuts have tapers at BOTH ends. I seem to recall that GPO vans had them. Midget rims are 13 inch but Vauxhall Rostyles have 14 inch rims on some mod...

Having the middle 2 exhaust stubs come outboard more will allow all 4 pipes to be of equal length which aids exhaust pulse extraction (In theory?) There is enough of a gap at the rear for a float chamber to fit between the carb body and the crossmember without getting smacked but it won't work if th...

I have the same carbs but with zero degree float chambers and longer, by about an inch or two, inlet tracts. Might be possible to get a heatshield in there more easily with the carbs further outboard plus you'd have a better chance of having a bunch-of-bananas exhaust manifold under there. Doesn't d...

Might be worth checking to see what thread is on VW Beetle crank/head through bolts. I've a feeling that some are 8mm but most are 10mm coarse. A good source of precut threads and the bolts/studs are long enough that you could stick any thread you wanted on the other end. Homecut threads (as opposed...

The adaptor for a capilliry gauge from any later Morris or Midget will fit and allow the use of a cap gauge temp unit.
