Re: Problems with refitting 948/1098 style oil cannister
Katy Hi I have just been and checked the number of the filter fitted to my Minor and it states on the filter casing FRAM 5210. It does not have to be a FRAM filter but any make of filter so long as it is bigger than the small canister filter reccomended for the canister filter head conversion. Check...

Re: Problems with refitting 948/1098 style oil cannister
When I worked in the BMC garage I used to find that Duckhams 20/50 produced lots of mayo in the rocker covers of 'A' Series engines. Change to Castrol 20/50 and the problem went away! So engines producing Mayo cannot always be considered to be running cool. As regards keeping the inside of the petro...

Re: Problems with refitting 948/1098 style oil cannister
I have just stripped a late MG midget 1275cc engine for rebuild and it was fitted with a canister filter and a raiser block between the engine block and filter head. I assume the raiser block was to allow the filter to clear the chassis leg. Earlier 1275 midget blocks appear to have the 'proper' fil...

Can you confirm the measurements because if you take it as read you have cam lobes of 13.5 inches. I do not know about wear they seem to have grown.

Re: Problems with refitting 948/1098 style oil cannister
If you decide to fit the screw on canister oil filter head you can if you want to use the longer (13cm) Ford screw on oil filter i.e. FRAM Part No: PH5210. The more filter the more crud it will catch. To compliment the oil filter use the ESM magnetic oil sump drain plug Part No: 10M247A.

Re: Too much pressure?
Idealy when fitting a new oil pressure relief valve it should be lightly lapped in. Great care should be taken to ensure that the lapping paste DOES NOT get into the oil ways. BMC reccommended using Oil Pump Relief Valve Grinding Tool Pt No: 18G69 specificaly for the lapping of the relief valve but ...

Re: Too much pressure?
If you are determined to cut the spring make sure that it is the remaining correctly formed end that sits on the ball bearing and the cut end sits inside the cap.

Re: Too much pressure?
When using the ball bearing instead of the standard plunger (Pt No: 12H865) you should use shorter and stronger spring (Pt No: AEA536) which has a free length of 66mm. Original oil pressure relief valve spring (Pt No: 6K853) has a free length of 73mm and is much weaker. If finer control of the max o...

With respect using an old big end shell in untrained hands to lock the flywheel is just inviting disaster!

Re: Spitfire aircraft
I live not too far from Middle Wallop air field and when there is an air show the participating aircraft usually form up over the village where I live before being called in to carry out their display. A couple of years back a Spitfire and a ME109 circled round and round over the village just as I w...

Re: Tightening crankshaft pulley bolt
I would never reccomend using a screw driver (or similar) to lock the flywheel when setting the torque (or undoing) the crankshaft pulley nut/starter dog). Scraped knuckles spring to mind. Unless you have help it is extremely difficult to hold the screw driver and torque up/undo the pulley nut/start...

I would suggest those minors in Cyprus are like the Strategic Reserve of Steam engines sitting somewhere in the UK.
I have read that two Spitfire poachers have been shot dead trying to raid the Burma site.

Re: Cylinder head gasket gone...again!
Glad to hear that your head and block are OK. As regards running on after switching the ignition you are right in that the cylinder mixture is self combusting indicating a hot spot somewhere in the combustion chamber. To stop it running on all I can suggest is that you make sure the timing and mixtu...

Re: Cylinder head gasket gone...again!
After cleaning off the gasket residue put a straight edge across the head/block where the gasket blows and see what feeler gauge thickness you can get between them at that point.

bmcecosse is right in that the balance pipe is not there to carry a fuel charge it is there to help equalise the depressions/pulsations generated in the inlet manifold tracts. I run a 1380 A+ with two 45 Webers using all 4 chokes and there is NO balance tube between the inlet manifolds and for my en...

Re: Top trunnion pivot pin
Unless you have an early minor with proper top pivot pins (screwed or plain, see Minor wksp man sect K4) there is no need to ensure that there is 0.002 end float . I totally agree with bmcecosse do not remove the top pivot pin unless it has to be replaced because of damage or wear; just replace the ...
