Re: mild road rage

This has always been an issue when driving anything perceived as low-powered. You can drive a big Jag at a gentle 45 - 50mph along a B road without harassment from following drivers. Do the same speed in old car and many motorists get this irresistible urge to risk a pass. When I'm cycling I can tel...

Re: Radiator Blind

Assuming your gauge is working correctly, I’d imagine it is a dud thermostat. All the Minors I’ve owned have managed to warm up fine - my current car (which has a gauge that I’ve fitted) has an 88 degree thermostat in it and runs at the same temperature all year round. I’ve never needed a radiator ...

Re: If I were you...

Just on the clutch - what does everyone recommend? ESM are selling the Borg & Beck kit, but I'm reading as many horror stories as I am good reviews, people saying it's cheap chinese rubbish etc etc others saying it's absolutely fine. There's a checkered history of B&B becoming AP Driveline ...

Re: Rheostat not functioning?

What about the connection of the winding wire to the "power in" terminal ("slow fan" in your picture). It looks like a fairly basic metal plate held against the wire by the compressed metal grommet which is your power-in terminal. There is potential here for looseness to have dev...

Re: Rheostat not functioning?

First thoughts are: is there good spring pressure from the moving contact blade onto the windings; are the contact areas (blade onto winding) clean & shiny? There could be decades of deposit which just need cutting through with an electrical contact cleaning fluid.

Doesn't sound as though the float needle is being overwhelmed by too much pump pressure if the petrol level is below the top.

I still don't understand how the cracked axle has caused the diff to fail though??
Maybe run dry after total oil loss through crack?

Any updates? Was the ebay filter OK? Is it a simple matter of measuring the bore of the central feed tube?

Re: Lowlight with demister vents?

A little late to the party with this one. My Nov 1950 Lowlight has vents but no water pump. However, they did have heaters. They picked up hot air from the radiator which was circulated with a fan in the car. So instead of plumbing to carry water through the firewall from the engine coolant, does y...

Re: Longevity of front tie bars

My tie-bar story: nearly 50 years ago I bought a late 1950's Riley 1.5 (that's the one based on Minor chassis) with front-end shunt damage, dirt cheap but still driveable, bought it to use till MOT expired then scrap it. I used it heavily for some months (regular long fast motorway trips with that l...

Why the interest?
Have you found a car that you are trying to date accurately? :)

This in "cars for sale" section. As an ex-lowlight owner I was surprised to see a heater. Very nice car, by the way.

Lowlight with demister vents?

Does anyone know whether later lowlights had demister slots in the dash?

My 1098 is in original fettle so has the added complication of needing a lead substitute. I use Millers VSPe additive, which claims to be not only a lead substitute, but protects fuel system from adverse ethanol effects up to E10 concentration. In addition it claims to enhance fuel by "up to 2 ...

Re: Clutch Slack tightening up at speed

Are you saying that the clutch takes up free play at speed, then reverts to normal free play at rest? If so, the only logical explanation is that the engine/gearbox unit is insecurely mounted to the extent that when the car is under power the power unit shifts position and takes up clutch play. Is t...

Re: starting

Strangely it has done it twice when parked in the garage at home for a couple of days but when left outside at work for a couple of days it has started fine. Could be a clue here. Mine needs full choke after a cold night outside, but only half choke if garaged, otherwise it can flood (although this...
