Re: How much is too much welding?
The question you should be asking is what sort of welding job your getting. If your local mechanic is simply patching it up for an MOT you are unlikely to get a job that will last. If the job is being done right it should be a permanent repair that lasts as long as the original has. If the mechanic ...

Re: Classic car snobbery
When I was younger I was a dead set Custom fan, I was always told by those of a similar disposition that all classic car owners were snobs and anoraks and should be avoided at all costs! The fist year I finished my little 58 Minor custom I did a round of local car shows in and around Hampshire. At o...

Re: Primer tips, please
If you mask those areas before you etch them you will end up with raised edges that will require even more work. Puff a couple of light coats with your can and unless you paint wet on wet then remember to key before adding your high build. I've never used 400 to prep for top coat but I think this wo...

I am a little far away to help but would love to see pictures of the project so far. Are there any to be seen?

Re: NWL 576
I think the point of this car is being overlooked. It was not meticulously restored in order to win concourse trophies. The car was repaired using current production parts because that is what was laying around. The time and cost involved in retooling dies to suit what was basically a publicity stun...

Re: Lucas L482 rear lamps
I would absolutely love to get hold of an L482 lamp and matching reflector. The downside is that although it would be legal to fit it, in use I can't help but think it would be something of a hazard. Far to many muppets on the road. I also think the chances of finding two lamps would be somewhat unl...

Re: Bare Metal Restoration
Strip the panel to shiny new steel using something like a clean and strip disc. Wipe the panel down with a pre paint solvent and then apply a couple coats of an acid based etch primer.

Re: Video: Morris Minor Horror film - Parts required
Very first thing, turn the power and wire speed up on your MIG. You will get a flatter more consistent weld with better penetration. So far I can not see much wrong with what you have. The inner wing repair you want to fit should clamp up along the seam of the the Kidney panel with a folded seam at ...

Jim, are you able to substantiate your claim that a lap weld is stronger or are you voicing an opinion?

Re: Video: Morris Minor Horror film - Parts required
Because the cut on the car is so high, I would be inclined to trim away the inner wing until you have just the flat top part. Then without cutting the repair panel clamp it in place so it sits tight against the underside. Now bolt up the front wing to pull everything into place. You can now scribe t...

Re: Engine trouble
Keep soaking it in WD40 and occasionally trying to jiggle it. If every thing is loose it should move. Whilst your at it I would suggest checking the mechanical advance is free and the springs are not loose on their pins.

Re: barrie's project
The only thing I would change (and I am in no way saying you have done the job wrong) is that I would have trimmed the floor and outer under floor panels so they could be butt welded making the floor one piece as from the factory. That would eliminate the over lap next to the inner sill step and rem...

Re: Brasing the Morris ?
If the main part of the shell can not move or flex the only worry with the center cross member (for me) would be making sure it's in the right place in relation to the chassis rails.

Re: Brasing the Morris ?
Yes bracing the shell is an exceptional idea and lots of 2x2 box is ideal for doing so. However just as important is ensuring that your door gaps are perfect before bracing the shell.

Re: Doors back in car; with or without upper half/glas ?
I would go back to the paint shop and collect the other door. Then I would hang them first then assemble the frames.

Re: flex in floor
I've been away from the UK for some years but my understanding of the regulations is that a repair panel must be continuously welded where it is joined into a section but a join at a factory seam should replicate the factory welds. If you continuously weld along the edge of the sill seam you not onl...
