Re: Respray / engine overhaul
My brother runs a bodyshop in East Kent, Auto Body Care, in Sturry, near Canterbury: http://autobodycareltd.co.uk/ He did my Traveller a few years ago and did a cracking job of it - stills looks good to this day, despite being used in all weathers. They can also attend to the electrical side of thin...

Re: Fixing this vandal damage
Indeed, or Chemical Metal or JB Weld, perhaps even epoxy resin such as Araldite may be better and stronger alternatives to normal filler.

Re: Fixing this vandal damage
I assume the 'vandal' probably fitted wooden dashboard insert panels or similar, with self-tapping screws going through those holes to hold them on.
You could use filler, or preferably, braze or MIG-weld the holes, then grind the welds back.

Re: Buying a grease gun
Yes, it's worth doing. I once got caught out, and got lumbered with a pot of grease that didn't have the disc.

Re: Buying a grease gun
Most tubs of grease can be opened at the time of purchase to ensure it has the plastic disc.

Re: Buying a grease gun
Buy a pot of grease from any decent motor factors or Halfords, etc. They have a plastic disc with a centre hole inside; you unscrew the end of the grease gun, pull the spring tensioner back and press the canister tube down on the plastic disc. As you do so, it forces the grease up inside the cansist...

Re: Head gasket and rocker update
Has the engine really done 870,000 miles? :o If so, that's pretty impressive!!! You can get earlier rocker covers with the vent tube, but really shouldn't be necessary - just make sure your existing breather setup is in good condition. Maybe swill out the oil trap canister and oil filler cap gauze w...

Re: Head gasket and rocker update
Whether you change the timing chain depends on the mileage it has done, and how noisy/worn it is; if you're taking off the cover, try to lift the chain off the sprockets; if it easily lifts by a few mm, then it should be changed. Also check the sprocket teeth while you're at it; if they're obviously...

Is the gearbox retaining cable in place and correctly tensioned?
Can you feel any drivetrain 'thunk' as the noise occurs?

Re: Traveller black wooden board
My Traveller's panel, that it came with back in 1984, is a fairly thin fibreboard effort, only about 1/8" thick, with the metal strip along the top. It's a bit deformed, presumably due to damp, but still useable.

Re: engine won't run without choke
First off, ensure you have sufficient oil in the dashpot - engine oil is fine, and the level should be up to the top of the central piston (don't worry if you overfill it - it will just burn off). Check the carb settings are correct: http://sucarb.co.uk/technical-hs-type-carburetter-description-adju...

Trafficators were fitted to Minors from 1948 up to August 1961, according this link: http://potteries.mmoc.org.uk/ID/Lights.htm The Minor is an easy car to maintain in standard form, and fairly easy to upgrade to some mod cons, such as spin-on oil filter, alternator, disc brakes, etc., to make it ev...

Re: Winter preparations
There's usually either a drain tap or a drain plug on the bottom of the radiator, on the nearside (passenger side on a RHD car). However, sometimes an easier/quicker way is to remove the bottom hose and let the rad empty into a suitable pan (unless you don't mind mucky water staining your driveway)....

Nice car, however, those are Weller chromed steel wheels, not alloys.Ieuan wrote:1962 948cc Morris Minor OYM614A, first registered 18/4/1962. Painted an incredibly lovely Vauxhall Caribic Blue, with a nice n kitsch vinyl roof, and some shiny 13" alloys.

Brill thanks for that..... Would I have to drain the whole radiator to put the antifreeze in.. or just top up and check the concentration? It wouldn't hurt to flush the cooling system and replenish with fresh anti-freeze mix if it hasn't been done in ages (it should ideally be done every year or so...

I think the blue (ethyl/glycol-based) anti-freeze is fine, it's the pink stuff that can cause issues in older cars. Waxoyl is the most common rust-proofing product, readily available in Halfords, etc.: http://www.halfords.com/motoring/paints-body-repairs/car-rust-removal-treatment/hammerite-waxoyl-r...
