Re: 948 Gearbox bush or bearing

I've answered my own question. Getting access to some1098 bits I find that the needle roller bearing fits the 1098 first and third shafts but not the 948 shafts. I shall have to get a bush. The altered bearing size (and the change to baulk ring syncro) explains the different part numbers between the...

Re: 948 Gearbox bush or bearing

Thanks Phil, a bush it is then. Have you any idea why the mainshaft is listed with two part numbers, both shown as 803 - 1098?

948 Gearbox bush or bearing

I've just dismantled two well worn 948 boxes in the hope of assembling one good one, and now doing the shopping list. I need the mainshaft nose bearing, where it enters the first motion shaft. ESM list a needle roller bearing for the 1098 and a bush for the 948, BM list the bearing as 948/1098. Whic...

Re: Traffic Census !!!

Thank you Mollyowner, what a wonderful piece of officialese gobbledegook! If I have read it correctly they are assuming 95% accuracy, but no mention of how this is assessed. Guesswork presumably.

Re: Traffic Census !!!

Since they spend so much time and effort on these surveys it would be interesting to know how much valid data they actually collect. How many people give accurate replies and what proportion lie, refuse or tell them to 'go forth and multiply' .?

Re: Bare Metal Restoration

Reading this thread I am tempted to try citric acid as it seems to be effective, reasonably safe to handle and cheap for removing surface rust from a lowlight grille. I think the grille bars are a little delicate for severe blasting or power brushing. The only snag I see is that my only container bi...

Re: ROSE TAUPE PAINT

There are sometimes errors with the labelling of spray cans. I had some Smoke Grey which came out dark blue. The suppliers replaced it when I queried it with them.

Re: Stainless exhaust

Stainless exhausts can sometimes be a bit louder than mild ones because stainless steel is more brittle and resonant than mild steel. But If yours is so loud that others comment it sounds like there's something wrong with it.

Re: Reg plate A reg

Yes, the use of the year letter was partial in 1963. However I believe DVLA now issue A suffix numbers for all allocations for 1963 vehicles, presumably to save the six digit numbers for earlier cars. I say this based on experiences of an aquaintance who registered an imported 1963 motorcycle and re...

Re: Reg plate A reg

Numbers with an a reg suffix letter are what is now issued as age related for 1963 vehicles. That was the first year they used year letters.

Re: Checking the Diff oil

Jacking isn't essential but you might as well combine oil checking with the rest of a full service and remove the wheels to adjust the brakes and grease handbrake cables and propshaft.

Re: Checking the Diff oil

Using four stands is ok if you can use a trolley jack. When you jack for the second pair the jack should roll and avoid tilting the first pair. This requires a reasonably smooth surface so the little jack wheels can turn easily.

Re: Lowlight conversion for series 2

Thanks Rob, I'd like to do it like an original lowlight as far as possible so the dimensions you use would be much appreciated. I'm not the worlds greatest sheet metal worker but I have a big hammer and my neighbour has a tree stump. :D

Re: Hockey stick bolts.

The studs are 2ba but the main difficulty will be getting the broken pieces out. I drill right through and use 6mm stainless bolts with domed nuts on the outside. The thread is then not under the wing so it can be taken apart easily in future if needed. It all depends how particular you are about or...

Re: Lowlight conversion for series 2

Thanks for all the advice.

Rob, the inner slotted headlight brackets are missing from my lowlight grille panel. Are yours spot welded in place? Is the cover panel rear flange the same shape as the front one? Have you a template or dimensions for cutting the blank sheet?

Thanks, Ian

Re: Windscreen washers

You will need washers for the mot. When they were made compulsory in the 70s the law was (unusually) made retrospective and they had to be fitted to older cars. The only exception is if your windscreen opens.
