Re: starting
Nor me......I can't see how an engine would flood with ignition off. You would expect wet plugs if the engine has been turned over without firing. Sometimes this car starts, sometimes it doesn't. I'm beginning to suspect the electronic ignition gizmo....it is quite normal for the pump to clatter a b...

Re: Loss of power
It's possible that the vacuum unit is breaking down and not able to adjust the timing for the load. It could also have been a bit of muck temporarily blocking the jet. That, too, is possible and it may be worth removing the petrol pump filter to check it is not clogged up and that it is not damaged...

Re: Loss of power
Might well be electrical........but hard to say exactly which part. I had this once, which got progressively worse over time. It turned out to be the rotor arm breaking up. Another time the car stopped dead and I immediately suspected the rotor arm - fortunately had a spare and was off agin within a...

Re: Clattering noise
Yes, as someone has posted on another thread, it's handy if OPs do give an outcome to whatever issue they raised as it may help others in the future with a similar query/problem. Quite so - and it is rather inconsiderate to those who have tried to assist as well :( This is not the first time people...

Re: starting
Although (assuming the float lid is the kind that has the float itself attached to it) removing the float lid will also remove the float which displaces a volume of fuel, so I would expect the level to then be (20mm?) lower in the float chamber......

Re: footman james
Doesn't the club have some kind of 'exclusive car insurance scheme' with FJ? Perhaps it should be looking into this and getting a better deal with another company?

Re: standard or 4.5 diff.
One would expect a diff running without oil to be very noisy, thus alerting you to the problem.................at least, that has been my experience on one occasion, but the diff certainly didn't break.....it hadn't run completely dry.

Re: standard or 4.5 diff.
Both 'philthehill' and I have suggested (and 'liammonty' has hinted) that it will be best to replace like for like and as you can get that for £205 less than the other set-up, its a no-brainer, really.......

Re: standard or 4.5 diff.
If its a standard 1971 traveller, the diff off a 1969 saloon will be the same as the one you had (4.22) so you might as well use like for like.

Re: Starting Dad's old Minor
Lucy sounds a good name - unpretentious, down-to-earth and endearing....just like the cars themselves! :D And if its 3 degrees below zero up where you are, no wonder the old girl needed a bit more choke! Even kept in a garage the oil will be thicker, making the engine slower to turn over and harder ...

Re: Starting Dad's old Minor
There you are, Alice I said she'd be fine. 8) Looks like the old girl needs 1/2 to 3/4 choke to start easily in winter........ Assuming the car is in good running order and regularly serviced there shouldn't be any question of the car not starting - once you have the hang of the choke knob! If you e...
