Personally, I would trial fit all the outer panels before painting. You can then fettle, pull, push, and bend them in to the position that achieves the best fit for your car. Further to Palacebear's thread above, the SVA has since been superseded by the Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) test which is slightly more onerous. I know as I am building a kit car and will be applying for an IVA test soon. The system is run by VOSA and covers all vehicles, imports, kit cars etc....

The MM boot hinges are quite distinctive to the later 'rounded' type, they end in a very sharp point and almost impossible to find!

The exception being gold or silver for reconditioned units. And as far as I know the MM gearboxes were all the same colour 'blue' with recon units being gold...
