Re: Head gasket failure-3rd in 2½ years
I thought a couple of photos of the top of the block might be in order. IMG_20210611_205255774_HDR~2.jpg IMG_20210611_205306923_HDR~2.jpg There are clearly defined rings around the bores, this I assume is where the gasket sits. There is quite a lot of oil on there surface of the block-some, at least...

Re: Head gasket failure-3rd in 2½ years
No, that's my thoughts, Les. I might put one down to faulty manufacture, or poor quality, but 3, each from different suppliers...... No, there's a deeper problem somewheres.

Re: Head gasket failure-3rd in 2½ years
Thanks for posting the photos of the failed head gaskets. My conclusion is that you have got problems with the top of the block and/or the face of the cylinder head. To overcome this repeat head gasket failure I recommend that you have the top of the block and cylinder head face skimmed. I was afra...

Re: Head gasket failure-3rd in 2½ years
Head gasket failure timeline. Starting from the bottom:- Composite gasket, fitted July 2016, lasted ~5000 miles, failed between 2 & 3 cyls Sept 2018. Copper gasket, fitted July 2019, lasted ~1800 miles, failed between 3 & 4 cyls Nov 2020 Copper gasket, fitted Dec 2020, lasted ~1600 miles, fa...

Re: Head gasket failure-3rd in 2½ years
Have to admit, I'm not minded to fit an oil cooler. Extra complication, more to go wrong, and if I understand correctly, it isn't going to fit on the Marina block anyway. Timeline of head gasket failures is as follows:- Composite gasket fitted July 2016, failed Sept 2018, ~5000 miles. Copper gasket ...

Re: Head gasket failure-3rd in 2½ years
I don't have an oil cooler, Personally I wouldn't run one without an oil cooler if your using it regularly and are doing, or want to do, motorway journeys but it's up to you. In case you decide to fit one here's a couple of links. It's not a difficult job, however if you do fit one you need to fill...

Re: Head gasket failure-3rd in 2½ years
Forget about the composite gasket - this is the gasket I would recommend you use. http://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/Engine/Cylinder_heads/Gaskets/GEG300.aspx?100401&ReturnUrl=/search/classic/head%20gasket.aspx|Back%20to%20search That's the one that I put on in Dec 2020, that has just go...

Re: Head gasket failure-3rd in 2½ years
I don't have an oil cooler, and I do have antifreeze in the coolant.
I have done a rough check on the head, with a steel rule, but that's very hit and miss. I am prepared to get the head skimmed first, getting the engine out and stripping it is not something I want to do if I can avoid it.

Head gasket failure-3rd in 2½ years
So, after being trailered home from Exmoor last night, I've whipped the head off. As I suspected, the head gasket has failed, between no 2 & 3 pots, again. This is the 3rd since Sept 2018, the last being Nov last year. This one has managed about 2000 miles, the previous one something similar. Th...

Re: (Not Quite) MOT 2021
Lovely area around Exmoor, I haven't been there since 2005 and that sadly was for a funeral - and I was on crutches! It is lovely around here. Would been even more enjoyable if I didn't now have a suspected head gasket failure.... :( Might be a faulty plug, I'm not sure, off to Minehead tomorrow to...

Lovely spot, somewhere up north in England? We were a Minor on Tour on a riverside site in France, 1971 trav and 1979 trailer tent - plus 3 year old dog on his first ever camping trip.IMG_0273.JPG P5280005.JPG P5300018.JPG Porlock, Somerset. Re: Rear hub gasket
Can I ask what is a C3 bearing, and how is it different to the standard fitting?
Not sure whether the ones I fitted were C3 or not, but they were moving within the hub. The hub may have been worn, which may have caused the movement-some bearing lock has cured the movement.

Re: radiator bottom hose connection weeping
Tried that, they are tight. I'm wondering whether more modern hoses are slightly too large in the inside diameter?JOWETTJAVELIN wrote: ↑Mon May 24, 2021 11:05 pm Worth checking the clips again and see if you can get a turn out of the screw as they settle.

Re: radiator bottom hose connection weeping
I've also got leaking hose problems. The bottom hose was weeping from the joint with the radiator, so I took it off, and found a small dent in the radiator pipe. I restored it to its proper shape, and refitted the hose, with 2 jubilee clips. There is about 6cm of hose overlapping the pipe flange, so...

Re: Ford discs-sticking caliper?
It is not a carrier; it is one of the bearing races . IF the difference is 0.2mm interference fit, that is in the realms of permanent shrink fitting. I suggest the ‘best you can make out’ is simply not good enough. You have the old race and the new one, so compare them? If the bearing race went in ...

Re: Ford discs-sticking caliper?
I have measured the outer diameter of the carrier with a Vernier caliper. it comes out as 47.04mm. The inside diameter of where it fits in the hub, however, is as best as I can make out, 46.82mm. so over 0.2mm interference. Without wishing to put ideas into anyone's head-that seems a bit too much of...

Re: Ford discs-sticking caliper?
A bit of heat, and some wiggling of the old carrier with a small pair of molegrips released it.

Re: Ford discs-sticking caliper?
Only problem with using the old carrier as a drift is..... How do I then remove it when it becomes stuck in the hub along with the new one?
