Re: Paint Prep

Not just for Panky - I was impressed with Rod's contribution to another recent thread, so watching this carefully before starting my painting stage.

Re: Hello all.

Thanks, hadn't realised it was the backing sheet as well - looks pretty effective. I gave up worrying about odd tenners soon after I started on this restoration malarkey.......

By my standards that's nearly finished, looks fantastic. Where did you get the heater stickers from?

Re: Welding - underside - thoughts?

Well at least you will know that its been done, just make sure the guy doing the welding shows you the quality of his work on other cars, and also during and after he has welded your car, as too often they clag waxoyl on the car when its finished and you haven't a clue is its a good job or an expen...

Re: Welding - underside - thoughts?

To be fair to MOT testers in general, take a look at my O/S chassis leg which I started yesterday. Externally it looked and felt sound, apart from some trolley jack damage. I decided to change both legs after removing the gearbox cover and finding large volumes of flaky rust making their way backwar...

Re: Welding - underside - thoughts?

Mine had a similarly questionable MoT and I considered reporting it for investigation, but decided I had left it too late. I take Rod's point about the limits of a test and the focus on the tester rather than the bodger, but I felt that there was at least a strong suspicion that there may have been ...

Re: Welding - underside - thoughts?

You are far from being the first to buy a supposedly sound car and then start discovering the reality. In my case it has led me into an unplanned major diy restoration, which I'm actually really enjoying, but I'm at a stage in life where I can afford the time and (to a lesser extent) the money. I'm ...

Re: Genuine lowlight Convertible for sale?

Value is entirely subjective. I've just returned from camping next to nice retired couples who have spent north of £60k on motorhomes they will use a few weeks a year. Also many spend £20k on caravans. Madness to me, but whatever floats your boat (people spend a lot on those, too....) Life is unfair...

Re: Traveller roof respray

Not done it yet, but I intend to spray top before fitting, to make sure any movement of the T rubber doesn't show old paint. Then a respray of the gutters after fitting.

Re: Cracked Speedometer Glass

When I cleaned my speedo up the glass was bedded in black mastic, which was messy and probably not original. The glass was easy to remove, so it should be straightforward to have a piece of thin glass cut and replace it. A clock repairer should be able to supply suitable glass.

Re: Do the wheels still fall off??

I wouldn't be on this site if I wasn't fond of anachronisms! Still, there were people who blamed the 1970's mess on the erosion of true British values which started with that extreme left wing plot, the NHS, also born in 1948, so perhaps....?

Re: Do the wheels still fall off??

[quoteWhat were they thinking about?[/quote] You obviously have forgotten the history of British Leyland. The kingpin/trunnion arrangement was actually designed by the unions, as part of their plan to bring BL to its knees and then destabilise the entire country. Having succeeded with this they move...

Re: Traveller Chassis woodwork/restoration

Depends. If you want to keep using it until funds or time allow you to complete the job the woodwork first approach would be OK. Personally if doing this much work I' d prefer to restore the whole car before it went back on the road, in which case definitely woodwork last.

Re: Traveller Chassis woodwork/restoration

That is true, but I can halve the cost by fitting the woodwork myself. Is it ok to put brand new wood on with only a mere touch up of the parts which look bad? I'm close to fitting the wood on mine, so not quite the complete expert yet  , but my approach has been to concentrate on the areas w...

Re: Our 1st Moggy. 1956 Split Screen. WSL 230

Sure, I'll lose the £320 for the diff swap, but I'll have enough money to buy another nice Moggy, which will be checked out thoroughly. If you use a solicitor he will include the cost of the diff in the claim, as money spent by you in good faith before you knew of the problems, also as a rectificat...
