Re: Blowing Fuses Constantly

Before going to the trouble of fitting a new loom, it would be good to try and identify the short - might be a quick, easy fix. The heater and the trafficators may have been red herrings, hard to say. If the fuse blows with only ignition 'on' and all switches off, one thing you could do is connect a...

Re: Strange whirring noise under bonnet

As above - or take the car for a spin and when about to slow down or corner, disengage gears into neutral, switch the engine off and see if the sound appears or not (no need to worry about steering locks on these old cars 8) ). If it is still present then 'probably' something to do with the front wh...

Re: Blowing Fuses Constantly

Unfortunately, we don't know for sure if it is anything to do with the trafficators - first the OP thought it was, then it was thought to be the heater, and now back to trafficators again. It would be helpful to have a bit more detail on exactly how the trafficators are 'playing up'.......is traffic...

But I thought you said you had tracked down the problem to the heater, not the trafficator?

Re: Ignition light

Well, if it ran as a motor when out of the car but not 'in situ' there could be a wiring fault/poor connection in the car. Put the dynamo back in (but don't fit the fan belt) and test again - don't connect the F and D wires from the control box to the dynamo, but connect the two dynamo terminals tog...

Yes, that's it if your dynamo has been polarised to be -ive earth.

Re: Ignition light

So, if you have a +ive earth car (which I assume as you have a dynamo) the two joined dynamo terminals are connected to the -ive post of the battery and the dynamo body is connected to the +ive post of the battery. It should then motor briskly..

Re: Ignition light

Did you have the fan belt off/loose when you did the test? The dynamo can't run if the belt is still taut on the pulley - but it should 'twitch' as it trys to run. If the dynamo is out of the car now and you have a good battery, join the terminals together again, secure it in a vice or with your foo...

Re: Ignition light

Assuming that when you say "no life in the Dynamo" you mean it is not generating, then it could be worn brushes, which you can replace faily easily. The rough idling may be due to something else, although if your battery is very low and no charge, the engine will start to falter and stop a...

Choices, if you wish to retain +ive earth: Get another control box - although these are not as well made or reliable as the originals (cheapest) Get your original control box refurbished by a specialist firm (expensive) Get a dynamator (expensive, although there are much cheaper versions than the dy...

Surely worth a try to swap it out for the original. They can - and do - go wrong, as occasionally reported on here..

Re: E scooters

News today is that GPs will be prescribing cycling to combat the obesity crisis; so pedestrians are going to be under fire from E scooters and cyclists on the pavements. Thats kinda funny - I don't think that many obese individuals are likely to jump on a bike and pedal off into a slim and healthy ...

Re: worst year for minors

I tend to agree with 'Edward1949' in that the later models had 'plasticky interiors and a tinnier feel' which suggested that the 'later vehicle had definitely moved downmarket.' This trend was mirrored in many other cars of the time which were increasingly 'plasticky and tinny' as the 70's drew near...

Re: Smoky exhaust

A smoky exhaust is usually a sign of cylinder bore or piston ring wear. Compression test would be useful. If you get a low reading which increases after putting a teaspoon of oil down the plug hole and re-testing suspect worn rings. If not, maybe valves sticking or leaking. Presumably the car is usi...

Re: Panda Cars

Thanks for the info chaps. I remember them well sitting outside Penzance police station. I also recall a comic strip in 'Sparky' called 'L-cars' (obviously named after 'Z-cars') featuring two bumbling policeman - a fat one and a thin one. They should have driven a Minor but I don't think they did :(

Not quite James Bond, but if you look at the opening credits of the early (half-hour) episodes of 'Danger Man', a dark coloured Minor drives past as 'John Drake' hops into his sports car!

Panda Cars

Hello peeps. Another idle question of mine, which I hope some ex-policeman or Morris Minor expert can answer - when were Morris Minor Panda cars introduced and when were they discontinued? I remember them well, although it seems extraordinary now to think they were used as police cars!
