Dynamo/Starter Motor Identification (are these Minor parts?).

Back when my Mother bought her '62 Minor it came with a large amount of spare parts. Some of these parts weren't from a Minor, others were specific to the series MM etc. so I wondered how I could identify these dynamos and starter motors to know if they're suitable, and also whether they are only fo...

Re: Leather Strap inside door skin.

So I finally found the photos I'd taken of the leather strap (front and back):

So, any ideas of whether it's meant to be a part of the internal door frame/mechanisms or not?

Thanks :)

Re: Strange Pump arrangment....

I believe it's from when SU partnered with M.C. Escher... Maybe they thought it would give more horse power :D I mean I'm sure I'm wrong but could someone think the extra gravity of it being on a high mount bracket force more fuel into the car and.... I admit I'm as intrigued as you now I've seen yo...

Re: How many of you can weld, and how did you learn?

I can't weld but wish I'd learned.

The worst of it is I used to live near someone (sadly they died shortly after I moved) who was a good welder and would likely have taught me if I'd asked, but even though I got him to do some welding, it never struck me at the time to ask him to teach me.

Re: XPL59G

It could potentially be in a museum somewhere or private collection as a remote chance - I was watching an old (90's) TV program the other day, it had a vintage 1920/30's Bentley sports car on it - DVLA have no record of the plate on it, but I find it very hard to believe it got scrapped :D (not say...

I don't know how true or not it is, but I do remember people saying modern Maglites aren't quite so durable as they used to be - pretty sure they're made by the same company as the swiss army knife mind.

Re: TORCH!!

This is what I have, though the battery has finally given out in it and winding the dynamo does nothing- though I've had it since late 2011 so it did well.

I also have a couple of cheap eBay dynamo torches :)

Re: Purolator - how tight?

I know both the cannister that came with the head and the one from ESM were steel due to the surface rust :) I notice on the mini link it also warns you to use the correct collar in addition to the correct o-ring, but as you can only get one type of collar these days it's a moot point. I decided to ...

Re: Purolator - how tight?

Thanks for the link however given the current issues I think if I did go for another head I'd try through one of the restorers that sell second hand parts as opposed to risking eBay again.

Re: Purolator - how tight?

I'm starting to wonder if the head really does have a problem. The adapter leaks where it attaches to the head and I've tightened it so much the central 'nut' of the adapter is about 1mm away from touching the head, I know the adpter that went into the screw-on housing never went as deeply in as tha...

Re: Purolator - how tight?

Is it there? I take it you mean a washer where the oil pipe connects to the union? (and not the union connecting to the head?) Either way, as far as I'm aware No, I don't have any washer there and none appears in either the Moss or ESM diagram that I can see: https://www.moss-europe.co.uk/shop-by-m...

Re: Purolator - how tight?

So it appears that my final attempt tightening it last night succeeded in stopping the leak at the bolt. I turned the engine over with the starter this morning and discovered I hadn't tightened up the oil pipe, that's because it started raining as I was fitting it a week or so ago and so I only fing...

Re: Remote battery isolator

Not much use for a dashboard or boot fire  I prefer an extinguisher as it could be anywhere or someone else's vehicle Well you could fit one in the boot too, and I suppose one by the dashboard would be no worse than an airbag deploying (slightly messier though) Actually I have seen a vi...

Re: JJK 78J maroon Mini van

Might be worth checking out project pages/asking around on some classic caravan/campervan sites as that looks just the sort of vehicle to be turned into a micro camper.

I wonder why the top front window wiper was made in reverse to the main cars' windscreen wipers.

Leather Strap inside door skin.

I don't have a photo of it available, but I wondered whether there's any place within the door where one might find a tan brown leather strap (from memory about 2.5cm * 25cm). Last time I was working in my doors (2022 probably) I found a leather strap at the bottom of one, no idea if it's meant to b...

Re: Remote battery isolator

Especially as several circuits are non-fused :o a fire extinguisher easily accessible under the passenger seat also increases peace of mind :tu1: VW Camper owners fit an automatic fire extinguisher system in their T1/T2 engine bays. I suppose the Minor engine bay has the room for something like tha...

Re: Purolator - how tight?

Yes the collar is the right way up as I was sure the o-ring should flatten out to create a seal in the same way that you describe in your last sentence since the housing shape makes it apparent the two slot together. As far as you could tell on arrival of the "new" housing, the bottom of t...

Re: Purolator - how tight?

I used the term collar as that is what the spares sites call the dished metal washer but yes it is all assembled correctly (as far as I can tell from the diagrams on places like Moss etc.): Bolt > Collar > Small O-ring > Housing Then within the Housing: Spring > Flat Washer > Stepped/Domed Washer (M...

Re: Brakes

There used to be brake pads for the Minor (and other classics) that were shown to work as well as disc brakes at stopping an old car quickly, just wondered if it could be the pads not the servo that's making it stop violently.
